SportTicker: Nationals SS Guzman hits for cycle

Washington Nationals shortstop Cristian Guzman hit for the cycle against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.

Guzman hit a solo home run in the first inning and a single in the second off Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw. Washington’s lone representative at this year’s All-Star Game, Guzman added an RBI double in the sixth off Ramon Troncoso and capped off the cycle with an RBI triple off Joe Beimel in the eighth.

The last Nationals player to hit for the cycle was Brad Wilkerson on April 6, 2005 against the Philadelphia Phillies.

I just checked -- Guzman is the first Washington player to hit for the cycle in D.C. The previous instances were all on the road: Otis Clymer (at NY, 10/2/08); Goose Goslin (at NY, 8/28/24); Joe Cronin (at Bos, 9/2/29); Mickey Vernon (at Chi, 5/19/46); Jim King (at Bos, 5/26/64); and Brad Wilkerson (at Phi, 4/6/05).

I mention this because frequently, Nationals records are shown in a franchise (Montreal) context rather than a purely Washington one.

Also, there would be no cycle if Guzman hadn't tried to stretch a single into a double in the second inning (he was thrown out).

What player attributes most increase the likelihood of hitting for the cycle?

Triples hitter> HR hitter?
Low BB>High BB?

I don't get it. He had a single, got thrown out at second, and still had a single.

EDIT: I guess you meant there would have been no cycle if he had been safe? Or else I'm just missing something.

This was over a one-month period, right? There's no way Guzman could get four hits in a game.
