AP: Young and Bard of Padres leave game with injuries

San Diego Padres pitcher Chris Young and catcher Josh Bard were knocked out of Wednesday night’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals by Albert Pujols within a span of two batters.

Pujols hit a line drive off Young’s face in the third inning, forcing the right-hander to leave the game. Young immediately fell on his backside and put his right hand up to his face. Blood was running down his face.

After a few minutes of sitting on the grass, Young walked off holding a bandage on his face.
...
Bard went down in a heap and stayed on the ground for a few minutes before he was helped off the field, dragging his left leg.

Well, cross Young off the vampire list.

i hear Bard's ankle is broken.

wow.

Well, cross Young off the vampire list.
...but put Pujols on it. Why do you think he got so close to Young in the aftermath, with all that blood around?

The answer is obvious!

(And this really adds to the occasional discussion of Pujols' age - arguing that he's really 32 or whatever seems silly, when the truth is that he's actually 320)

ground ball hit by Albert Pujols

Looked like a line drive to me (caught off the end of the bat a bit)...

As Pujols went out to the mound to check on Young...Adrian Gonzalez pulled Albert away and they went into a impromptu prayer session!

Young had the front of his jersey and pants satched with blood...bad scene.

If so, the Padres' season now is officially "disastrous."

With how tall Chris Young is, it could have been a fly ball.

Incidentally, when did Pujols turn into a killing machine?

Well, Bard's ankle was just a freak thing. Was stretched out blocking the plate, so the ankle really couldn't hold up to a routine slide.

The best part about that would be that he could play FOREVER. Assuming he doesn't get a broken bat through the heart or anything.

What kind of contract could that pull? 20 years, 800 million, maybe?

We always knew he could handle a bat! No wonder!!!

Pujols owes the Padres a favor - he should take out Greene trying to break up a DP or something.

So, probably a good time to drop CYoung (the pitcher) in a mixed non-keeper league?
   12. Sparkles Peterson Posted: May 22, 2008 at 06:17 AM (#2790674)
Honestly, this was all location. Pujols didn't hit it squarely, and if it hits him anywhere other than the face it's something he probably walks off. There's always a chance that something like this gets to a pitcher, but I'd say this is about as benign as a big league line drive to the face gets and shouldn't effect Young much.

I dunno, Matt Clement was never the same after he took a ball off his head/face when he was pitching in Boston.

Matt Clement's had shoulder problems for which he needed surgery.

After Peavy came up with his arm "problem" ; ) - the other Padres are coming up with creative ways not to play on such a @#$%& team.

Naw. The Cubs will sign him and he'll die.

Cross him off the vampire list then.

After draining Jim Edmonds of what vitality remained in his body, daywalkers Greene and Gonzalez have now sucked enough of Josh Bard's blood to make him, too, into a zombie, with easily fractured bones.

At least two players' careers have been ended by being hit in the face with baseballs in the last decade - Bryce Florie and Juan Encarnacion.

Has it always been like this? Probably.

It appeared that Young only suffered a broken nose. He didn't look dazed or anything, you can see on the replay he just looks kinda pissed. Surprisingly, he wasn't writhing in pain or anything. He just sat there with his arms on his knees and blood pouring out of his nose.

GSfRB now is officially the last person to get that memo.

After both were hurt in the third inning of San Diego’s 11-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday, the Padres put righthander Chris Young and catcher Josh Bard on the DL prior to Thursday’s contest against the Cincinnati Reds.
...
In corresponding moves, San Diego also optioned lefthander Joe Thatcher to Class AAA Portland and recalled righthanders Josh Banks and Jared Wells from Portland and catcher Colt Morton from Class AA San Antonio.

San Diego also designated righthander Justin Germano for assignment and purchased the contract of righthander Mike Adams from Portland.

Pujols should have his grandchildren taken away.
