Spring Training showings to get excited about

I guess it’s better than the alternative.

1. Matt Harvey, RHP, Mets (2 starts, 5 IP, 1 ER, 3 K)
Some wondered if Harvey would even get this far. After the past couple of years, no one knew what he was still capable of. At this point, the right-hander has given the Mets every reason for optimism. Harvey could be the difference between the Mets making and missing the playoffs. Or he could be dealt at the Trade Deadline.

2. Matt Kemp, OF, Dodgers (.313 BA, 3 HR, 1.228 OPS, 16 AB)
Wait, what? Wasn’t Kemp’s return a bookkeeping part of a complicated salary-dump trade with the Braves? Well, maybe not. He singled and homered in his first two spring at-bats, has been getting warm ovations and seems to be handily winning the Dodgers’ left-field job.

Oof, Matt Kemp. I'm headed to Spring Training next week, and I promise to not be fooled again by that guy. He's had so many great springs.

Reporting on today's Mets @ Nationals from The Ballpark at the Palm Beaches:
- Noah Syndergaard hit 100 MPH on the radar gun, and struck out 7 in a row. # Peaking Too Early
- With a 3-0 lead, Jeurys Familia gave up 5 runs in 2 innings. # Might Need New Closer
- Nationals top prospect Victor Robles continues to impress, and Matt Adams looks to be a useful bench bat.
- Still waiting to see Ryan Zimmerman, Daniel Murphy & Adam Eaton.

Ian Happ belongs on this list - he leads the Cubs in everything and his HRs have been crushed, with excellent exit velocities, not thin AZ air flyball cheapos.

Still plenty of time to go, but at this point - it's looking like he's going to be the CF.

Pretty good list and I agree mostly with the choices. I don't think there is ever a reason to get excited about any vets spring training performance other than if they are trying to prove they are healthy and for pitchers, if their velocity is there as well.

The other that is worthwhile to take from spring (imo obviously) is prospects or youngsters proving they can hang. I'm not at all excited that Avi Garcia is hitting 350 this spring (show it to me again in the regular season big fella) but Yoan Moncada making three incredible plays at 2B yesterday while going 3-3 with a BB and two runs scored a long with 20 year old "man child" Luis Robert hitting 400 foot grand slam? Yea, I'm excited.

Blake Swihart, C/DH/1B/OF, Red Sox

Jose's mancrush for this guy is otherwordly. He always did claim he was good with the lumber though. If he can be another great utility guy, then I'm all for that. Especially if the bat is solid he can get a lot of reps at 1B. My confidence in the Moreland/Ramirez combo is not high.

Kidding aside I think the Sox blew it by giving up so early in 2016 on him. I think he can still be a useful player though. I hope he makes the roster.

He's out of options, isn't he? Between him, Holt, and Marrero the Sox are going to have to release or trade one of them at least, potentially two.

At least according to BBREF, it looks like Thomas' defense actually wasn't half bad -- or at least, Dexter Fowlerian.
