Spy Ghana: A Plan To Promote Baseball In Ashanti Region Has Been Unveiled

Good luck, Albert Frimpong! (wasn’t that Lou’s name in Abbott and Costello Meet The Crawling Eye?)

Mr. Albert Frimpong, President of the Ghana Baseball and Softball Association (GHABSA), said the body has unveiled plans to promote baseball in the Ashanti Region.

He said it formed part of a five-year agenda to unearth talents and identify potential baseball and basketball players, coaches and other technical personnel.

Mr Frimpong said a standard baseball field would be constructed, baseball and softball clubs established in basic schools, and the holding of training of trainees workshops for physical education instructors.

He said GHABSA would team up with corporate bodies and non-governmental organisations to support clubs with the necessary equipment and training kits.

Mr Frimpong told a stakeholders’ meeting at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi that the association was committed to creating public awareness about baseball and softball through regular engagement.

One of the other headlines on the page was "S.H.S STUDENTS STILL GO TO CLASSES UNDER TREES IN ASHANTI REGION !!!"

I feel kind of bad that my first thought at seeing that was "Wow, that's awesome!"

For a second I thought this was just another story (albeit delayed) about the Ugandan Little League program. Glad to see that it's actually in Ghana. Hopefully this means that baseball is spreading in Africa.

In some African countries softball is pretty popular though the word "baseball" never appears. Maybe they're the exact same game, I am not sure.

Mmegi Online is always the best source for news on Botswana's Shell Softball League.

New Zealand national coach Kevin Henderson praises Botswana's softball program. Note that fellow New Zealand softball star Travis Wilson later became an AAAA player in the Braves system and is now working in cricket, a true renaissance man of the batted-ball sports.
