STAN FISCHLER: Joe Torre deserved his spot in baseball Hall of Fame

Stan Fischler…funnier than Abbott and Costello in “Hit the Ice”!

* As a Brooklyn boy, I’m tickled that Joe Torre has become a Hall of Famer.

* As a New York newsman, I covered Joe when he and brother Frank tore up the Parade Grounds League in Flatbush, across from Prospect Park.

* I have no problem with Bobby Cox or Tony La Russa making the Cooperstown trek.

* But why the big fuss over the Marvin Miller snub? The late baseball union boss of bosses long ago made it clear that he didn’t even want himself on the ballot.

* And who says the voters are either fair or know what the heck they’re doing in the first place? Then again, isn’t it a bit silly to get all hot and bothered of getting in or our of Cooperstown?

* Seattle is paying ridiculous money to Robinson Cano who is not a superstar and will not be missed at all in The Bronx by May.

* This Cano guy could have stayed in The Bronx and still be filthy rich. Thus, we’d have to call him disloyal to the Pinstripes. Others would simply label the man, ingrate.

* Not that the spate of Yankees signings will make much of a difference, except lower the numbers in the Bronx vault.

Wow, this guy is really bitter about Cano.

Yes, how dare someone take more money to play for a different team.

Wow, this guy is really bitter about Cano.
I wish he were concentrating more on his new job as vice-chair of the Federal Reserve instead.

Caring and its inverse are complicated.

This is such a pure old-school three-dot "random thoughts" column.

* Give the Giants points for giving us a few weeks of “Tease Football” until reality re-appered -- and the Jints disappeared.

* As for the Jets; don’t they rhyme with Mets?

* Screwball comedy never was better than “The Lady Eve” with Barbara Stanwyck, Henry Fonda and Charles Coburn.

* Alex Webster is the one Giant I miss the most.

* Phoenicia’s number one hockey fan, Patrick Kern, calls his favorite club “The Gumbi Rangers.” I still call them a playoff team. But only if Henrik Lundqvist plays up to his salary.

So this is the newspaper of Kingston, New York, a town I have never heard of. What's its relation to the oft-linked "LoHud"?

Also, who is this guy? I am happy to see people can make money writing random snippets of brain waves, but I hope he gets most of his income doing something else.

* Alex Webster is the one Giant I miss the most.

Aaron Rowand for me.

Wow, this guy is really bitter about Cano.

New York sports radio basically has exploded in LeBron-to-Miami-style rage. There's even a car dealer who recorded an ad slamming Cano ("Hope you like counting your money in the rain!"). Geez...it's as if nobody has the right to play anywhere but in New York.

Also, who is this guy?

He's pretty well known as a hockey writer and TV guy.

Andre, natch

And of course Stan Fischler's bio indicates that he never, ever took another job for more pay.

..but that Gretzky kid sucks as do all of those so-called prospects playing in the WHA...

I get a kick out of this after years of Yankee fan smarminess about the Boston press bashing ex players.

Hey, don't knock it. A few hundred columns exactly like that helped get Jimmy Cannon and Joe Falls the Spink Award.
   19. Gonfalon B. Posted: December 14, 2013 at 11:51 PM (#4618190)
Then there's the columnist who dare not Spink his name, Bill Conlin. If Conlin was going to imitate one of fellow columnist Larry King's traits, he should have gone for this kind of "stream of Tourettes inanity" writing, and not King's "date someone 50 years your junior" policy. You can only get away with that if you're Larry King and you invented farming.

The writer and Frank Torre are both 81. Frank Torre was playing minor league ball in Denver at 19. Hard to imagine Fischler covered him playing in Flatbush, as a newsman. Joe is 8 years younger. That makes more sense.

FYI, Larry King is 80. This guy's story has a Kingian feel to it:

---For my money, milk hasn't tasted the same since they started homogenizing it.
---A pal in Brooklyn told me FDR couldn't walk. Who knew?
---Is anything better than a grilled cheese sandwich and a bottle of YooHoo?

If this is the mindset of the avg. sportswriter, it's understandable why we have such a backlog waiting to get into Cooperstown.

Cano was a HOF-worthy superstar two weeks ago. Now he's a mercenary.
