Star-Telegram: Neal Cotts, Rangers agree on one-year, $2.2 million deal

He and the Texas Rangers avoided salary arbitration Wednesday when they reached a one-year deal after Cotts posted the lowest ERA by a reliever in franchise history.

Everyone liked the Mitch Moreland thread so much I thought we should look in on another of the Rangers’ journeymen :)

A well-deserved payoff for an amazing career comeback.  You couldn’t have found Cotts’s ERA last year with a scanning electron microsope.

I remember liking him as a pitcher back in like 2006 or 2007. I thought he was washed up by now.

He was. Then he came back.

It is a little hard to fathom that a guy who has pitched in 8 seasons, starting in 2003, and pitching a full MLB season in 2004, is still eligible for arbitration in 2014.

I don't know what's more surprising -- that he's still around or that he was actually so outstanding last year.

Did he learn a new pitch or something? That's a damn fine line, especially in Arlington...

I suspect it's mostly the Middle Reliever Corollary to Voros's Law.

Have you read 95% of the threads over the last three days?

He was OK... career seemingly at an end... comes out of nowhere with historically good season that defies normal pattern... something, something.... thousands of posts by Ray and Joey B.

But who will sign Johnny Baseballreference?

Oh boy, Frank Thomas is skeptical.

“I knew it was shady when Neal Cotts posted a 1.11 ERA,” Thomas said.”Neal Cotts was my teammate for three years coming up. So watching his career and watching him grow, for three years he was capable of only a 3.00 ERA, 2.50 at the most… there’s no way Neal halved that. With Craig Kimbrel, you really had to take a look at it because Craig Kimbrel had a 0.44 ERA as a rookie.”

So - does one grip the PED pitch with the seams or across the seams?

[7] Lol, I had the same reaction.

He was around so long ago I got him mixed up with Jim Parque.

I got him mixed up with Kelly Wunsch.

Wunsch should be a verb. Somewhere at the intersection of mastication and masturbation.

i remember one time back when i had nice 100-level seats in the lower dish @ comiskey i happened across a 20something couple comprised of a pretty big muscular dude and a solid ~8/10 petite blonde. what was most curious is that she had some custom made jersey-shirt thing that said "I'D NEAL FOR COTTS" on the front of it.

for the life of me i couldn't figure out if this was the coolest mean-looking muscular dude with a proper sense of humor in the ballpark, or if perhaps i had just ran across neal cotts' girlfriend and her brother. regardless, they missed out on having a golden all-time moment by not having him wear a similar shirt that said "AND I WOULD TOO!"

Wunsch seems like it would make a fine word for when you get your Chien-Ming Wang stuck in your zipper.

I can remember as a kid, that the sound it made was almost like 'Wunsch', followed by prolonged screams.

Tell Ron Washington I've got a nice warm Cotts ready for him in the bullpen.
