Star-Ledger: Computer finds Edwar Ramirez

“Fellow Travelers, we have a new catchphrase: “Statistics found him.”  I hope you’ll pardon…but I clipped it from ESPN’s Rob Neyer.

If anyone deserves credit for the Yankees’ discovery of Edwar Ramirez, it’s a computer.

“Statistics found him,” Billy Eppler, the team’s director of professional scouting, said yesterday.

...While Eppler looked for players who had been recently released by other organizations, Troy Caradonna—the assistant director of baseball operations in the team’s Tampa offices—checked statistics of the independent leagues.

Caradonna found Ramirez in the United League: 1.07 ERA, 46 strikeouts and 10 walks in 25 1/3 innings for Edinburg (Texas).

“We didn’t send anybody in to look,” Eppler said. “I looked at a few old reports, didn’t see anything (negative), and made a couple of phone calls checking on (mental) makeup.”

Ha, well if they fall anymore behind, they might have nothing to lose but to try him out in the pen.

Hey, they've gained 4 games in their last 9 games. They're on the cusp of being back in it.

You would think so, but when they were up 12-0, Joe didn't pitch him. When they were up 7-3, Joe didn't him. There haven't been many blowouts, one way or the other, since the 6th. That is still no ####### excuse for not pitching a guy with the upside Ramirez has. BAD JOE!

This might be frustrating for Yankee fans, but c'mon, Joe's always been a "My Guys" kind of manager, and this new guy isn't one of "My Guys" yet. I'm trying to figure out how Proctor became one of "My Guys."

Errrrrrrr you don't think that Joe had already heard this story of where Edwar's "scouting" came from and that is affecting his judgement and use of Ramirez? Even subconsciously? Ugh.
