Stephen Strasburg scratched from Nationals start; X-rays, MRI planned

It was a good career; better than Ryan Anderson and Brien Taylor combined, after all.

[Stephen] Strasburg was scratched from tonight’s start at Nationals Park against the Atlanta Braves, as Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo made the decision after Strasburg had trouble getting loose in the bullpen before the game.

Strasburg paused during his warmups and, after consulting with catcher Ivan Rodriguez and pitching coach Steve McCatty, ceased his throwing and left the bullpen. Rizzo told news reporters during Tuesday’s game that Strasburg was scratched for precautionary reasons and X-rays and an MRI are planned.

But good god I hope this isn't anything serious.

It's not in my best interest for some of the competitive fantasy leagues I'm in, but I don't want him to go the way of Wood and Prior.

at espn:

Rizzo says Strasburg has "stiffness and discomfort" in his right shoulder, but an MRI and X-ray show no structural damage, and "given a couple days' rest and anti-inflammatories, he should be better."

The McCoy signal just went up.

If the worst case scenario were to unfold here, all of a sudden Prior's career would look like Randy Johnson's in comparison.

I'm sorry I mentioned Herb Score's name in the last Strasburg thread.

And he missed out on his one and only shot at the All-Star Game, too.

Damn you, Charlie Manuel, damn you to Hell...!!!

I saw this on the email wire, and my first thought/wish was "caution on the part of the Nats." Sounds like that's the case. Here's hoping so.

Though he's no Strasburg, they lost Jordan Zimmermann at some point during the second half last year. Are the Nats cursed?

Not really. It isn't like pitching in the minors is less stressful on the body than pitching in the minors. The Nationals have been treating Strasburg with kid gloves. If he got hurt after all that he would have gotten hurt in the minors as well. At least this way they sold some tickets.

Of course this would happen on the same day that the Washington Post devoted half of its entire sports section to Strasburg, with an excited tone usually reserved for a Bob Woodward book excerpt. The Nats will now return to being a back page footnote behind the Mystics and the Redskins' assistant clubhouse equipment manager.

Never saw him pitch.

(Sorry, but come on, this was an obvious place for it).

Apparently it was "just" inflammation and he's day-to-day. However, I know the real truth: Mister Mxyzptlk, having already ruined Matt Wieters' season, has moved south in his campaign against the Supermen.

Jason Heyward better be on guard. Realistically, how in the hell would you ever get that dude to say his name backwards? I'm asking because I need to get that information to Heyward ASAP.

If there is even the slightest bit of real concern here, the Nats should just shut him down for the season now and not even take any chance at all of something serious.

Does Buster Posey come from a planet with a blue, or green, sun and is thus invulnerable to imps from a different dimension? Because so far, Posey looks more super than Wieters.

Pretty sure that name sounds the same backwards as forwards.

Posey hit .351/.467/.622 in his 2008 pro cup of coffee
.325/.416/.531 in a full year in 2009 between A+ and AAA
and was hitting .349/.442/.552 in Fresno when he was called up this year.
and of course he's hitting .366/.401/.565 in SF this year.

A few years ago some player once said his teammates were so young some of them didn't know what a slump was....
Seriously, has Posey ever been in a slump?

Meh, Strasburg looked pissed that they weren't letting him go. File this under "something every other pitcher in the big leagues would pitch through"

Realistically, how in the hell would you ever get that dude to say his name backwards?
? Trick him into writing, or reading aloud, something that -- unbeknownst to him until it's too late -- says it. (Probably the most common.)
? Mind control; e.g., Wonder Woman's lasso.
? Mispronounce it; have him correct you. (Slight variation: The old "I need to say what to get rid of you?" routine.)
? Induce amnesia, so that he doesn't remember his name.
? Create a device that broadcasts his thoughts aloud. Then, when he inevitably thinks "I have to remember not to say 'Kltpzyxm'"...
? Making him watch newsreel footage of himself where the audio is looped backward; when the recording says his name backwards in his own voice, Mxyzptlk is banished back to the 5th Dimension. (This seems like cheating to me, but apparently it worked.)
? Trick him into thinking he has a clone, which he then attempts to banish by saying it.

I hope this was helpful.
