Steve Wright, Red Sox agree to $1,375,000, 1-year contract

BOSTON- Knuckleballer Steven Wright and the Boston Red Sox agreed to a one-year contract for $1,375,000, a raise of $275,000, in a deal that avoided arbitration.

An All-Star in 2016, the 34-year-old right-hander started the 2018 season late following left knee surgery and a 15-game domestic violence suspension. He made four starts and six relief appearances, went back on the disabled list in late June because of the knee, then returned in September.

Well, at least he can return to the comedy-club circuit if pitching doesn’t work for him….

This guy may be the starting pitcher on the "If things were about 10% different, he'd be making a ton more money" team. He suffered a knee injury on kind of a freak baserunning injury, of all things; the arrest greatly diminished the fan base's goodwill towards him. He was (is?) all teed up to be the next Tim Wakefield in Boston, and with a number of big free agent decisions coming in the next two years for the team, a guy like this could be exceptionally valuable as a back-of-the-rotation guy (like Wakefield was). But he can't get it together for a full season...

Is this true? I can only speak to friends and family opinions on this but I don't hear it brought up much if at all.

Imagine all the dehydrated water he can buy with that.

I'm always a fan of more knuckleballers, so good on the Sox. Now if only we can get more submariners, guys with eephus pitches, and pitchers with Hideo Nomo's windup we'll be good.

Just not all the same guy at the same time. A submarine eephus knuckleball with a Nomo windup is a bit much.

Actually, this is precisely what I often do on the mound in slow-pitch softball.

It's killed my goodwill towards him. And I'm primed to love a knuckleballer after Wakefield and Dickey being on the teams I love. I don't have an actual problem with the Sox re-signing him, but I'm not going to be enthusiastic the way I would be otherwise.

Good BBTF handle here.

I could see Cueto trying it when he comes back from TJ.
