STL Post-Dispatch: Cardinals give up lead again [but win]

Pujols drilled a two-run home run to left-center field in the 14th inning to give the Cardinals’ a 10-8 victory against the New York Mets, halting a five-game losing streak and finally seizing a chaotic night in Queens that included two blown leads and several historic performances.
...
Pujols’ bolt rewarded the relief of Kelvin Jimenez and others while scoring Skip Schumaker, who keyed the winning rally with his sixth hit of the game. Schumaker is the first Cardinal in 73 years to have six hits in a game, tying a record last set by Terry Moore in 1935 against the Boston Braves.
...
The Mets struck for the tying run [in the ninth] against acting closer Ryan Franklin. Tatis’ solo home run to lead off the ninth knotted the game, 8-8. It was the third consecutive appearance that Franklin had allowed a home run, the fifth home run he has allowed in his previous 10 2/3 innings pitched.

It was the third consecutive game that he left with either a blown save or a loss.

The Cardinal bullpen only allowed 3 runs in 10 innings although they did allow a boatload of baserunners. The Mets only had one hit in 16 or 17 AB with RISP.

I hope Lohse got to bed early. He'll ####### need it.

I told you Ryan Franklin would bring misery and woe. Get rid of him before it's too late! Trade him for John Van Benschoten!

This might have been discussed elsewhere, but what about McClellan as closer?

It might have to happen soon. McClellan is supposedly in line to join the rotation next year, but he's one of two good relievers right now, although Springer will probably get the next shot at closing.

The odd thing about the Tatis AB was that Franklin just resolutely refused to throw him anything but his averageish fastball. I know Tatis kills curveballs, or at least bad ones, but you can't throw nothing but fastballs like that. Later on, Franklin threw some very nice hooks to A. Reyes, and got him out with that.

I don't know if that is Franklin's problem generally, but it sure as heck was to Tatis.
