STL Post-Dispatch: Edmonds, Looper going on the DL

Centerfielder Jim Edmonds and starting pitcher Braden Looper will be moved to the DL, the Cardinals announced this afternoon.

Edmonds did not play in the final two games of the Oakland series and, on his KTRS radio show Sunday, manager Tony La Russa mentioned that Edmonds was dealing with some leg soreness. Looper left Friday’s game in Oakland with a shoulder strain.
...
The Cardinals promoted lefthanded pitcher Troy Cate and center fielder Skip Schumaker to the major-league club Monday and both are expected to be on hand and available for tonight’s game against the Kansas City Royals, the Cardinals’ Triple-A affiliate confirmed Monday.

Hopefully Bizarro Skip continues to show up with his .314/.379/.500.... That's right, a .500 SLG for skip, which completely baffles me.

Also, what the heck does Ankiel have to do to get a call up? Stab So Taguchi in the back?

He only has 12 walks vs. 54 strikeouts this year (.286/.323/.608), and has no options left, so when he comes up, he's up to stay.

FWIW, an unsubstantiated rumor floating around is that Schumaker is being given ABs to showcase as part of a potential trade (with Anthony Reyes) for Mark Buehrle.

I cannot find a reliable source for this, however.

Skip Schumaker is the third best outfielder in Memphis.

Well, yea, I knew the reasons for it, and they want him to play every day, I just wonder about the moves sometimes.

Like why Skip over John Rodriguez? Is it bacause he's not a scrappy little white guy?

Buerhle to the Cards? My Fantasy Team wishes it were true!

Schumaker?!? He's 27, and doesn't exactly possess the greatest track record.

On top of that, Erstad and Pod are both supposed to return in a matter of days. Why would the White Sox need another LH CFer?

I'm just reporting what I've heard. It doesn't make much sense to me, either. Ryan Sweeney seems to be just as good. It's probably nonsense.

Obviously, the centerpiece of such a deal would be Reyes.

Ah, good ol' Jocketty and his love for grizzled old vets. My guess is he'd trade Danny Haren for Buehrle if he still had Haren on the Cardinals...

Well, Reyes is only two years younger, IIRC.

Plus with Ankiel, you don't exactly want to get him up and have him fail. Don't think his head could take it.

So far he's scuffled in AA (1-20 start, sent down to A ball) and AAA (terrible start to this year), I think he can handle it.

And play. TLR is a lot like Whitey in that respect - the guys who they hope will have long-term futures with the team don't come up to sit.
