STL Post-Dispatch: Izzy blows it again

Closer or not, Jason Isringhausen continues to blow games for the Cardinals. Thrust into an eighth-inning role today with the Cardinals leading Pittsburgh 5-4 at Busch Stadium, Isringhausen coughed up four runs—one on his throwing error and three on a Jason Bay homer—as the Pirates came back from a 5-1 deficit and won 11-5.
...
“I don’t have any excuses, and I don’t have any more answers,” Isringhausen told reporters after the game. “I wish I could say my arm was falling off, but I can’t.

“I felt good today, my mechanics were in order, but the end result was terrible. I feel healthy, and my being healthy isn’t good enough. At this point, it’s a management decision (what to do about him). I’m embarrassed.”

Updated Post-Dispatch

Isringhausen and team officials have denied a physical ailment is the reason for his recent struggles; however, club sources indicated Thursday he has been receiving treatment on his arthritic left hip.
...
The club is expected to put Isringhausen on the disabled list today or broach the possibility of designating him for assignment, a procedural move that would place him on waivers before reassigning him to a minor-league affiliate.

we knew he was going to be a source of worry, but the he11 of it is, everybody else is doing pretty well, so it makes it all that much more frustrating.

I feel sorry for Izzy. There's nothing sadder than when a pitcher has one of those "nothing is physically wrong with me, I just suck" moments in front of the press. And he's taking his medicine like a man.

He's saying he's healthy and his mechanics are fine, but he was throwing his fastball slower and straighter than he ever has before. He stuck almost entirely with the 4-seamer today, and it averaged about 90 MPH, with a few in the high 80s per pitchF/X. Combine that with a curve he couldn't throw for a strike and Tony must have been the only person in the stadium who didn't see that big inning coming.

Updated STL Post-Dispatch:
Isringhausen will be examined this morning by team orthopedist Dr. George Paletta. Isringhausen and team officials have denied a physical ailment is the reason for his recent struggles; however, club sources indicated Thursday he has been receiving treatment on his arthritic left hip.

"He's beside himself, puzzled, the whole thing. He's Problem No. 1 right now," La Russa said. Isringhausen classified today's expected move as "a management decision."

The idea of him being DFA is crazy to me. Seems like yesterday I was watching Jim Edmonds terrorize the Cubs on a regular basis and Izzy nailing down the saves. Now they both suck. Maybe the Cubs will make my hair fall out and acquire Izzy.

You take Marquis, we'll take Izzy to DFA later in the day.

So's your mom.

Also, is that even legal?

He'll probably be DL'd, to work on his problems with a re-hab assignment soon, while Perez comes up and becomes the setup guy in front of Franklin, and then hopefully Perez takes over as closer in another month...

Careful now gef, or you'll play out our new meme just as quickly as we beat the older one ("legal?") into the ground. It must be used wisely, only for the good of mankind.

BTW, Isringhausen has been placed on the 15-day DL with, of all things, a "cut on his right hand." Or so say the Cubs TV announcers right now.

Me too. He was pretty darn good last year, wasn't he? 2.48 ERA and 54 Ks in 65 IP.

Self-inflicted?
