[Anthony] Reyes didn’t win Sunday afternoon at McAfee Coliseum; however, the Cardinals did, 10-6. They survived because Reyes stiffened after a five-run, [4]-hit first inning reminded him why he had spent three weeks at Triple-A Memphis… Reyes followed a traumatic start with four shutout frames.
...
Reyes called his stuff “hit and miss.” There was much more hit than miss early. But with about a dozen scouts looking on, what might have become a disaster instead became a show of resilience.
“He showed a lot of toughness. He didn’t cave in,” manager Tony La Russa said.
...
“I wasn’t nervous,” Reyes said. “It was just a different setting. It’s different pitching up here than pitching down there.”
...
Needing 101 pitches to get 15 outs, Reyes pitched around consecutive walks that loaded the bases in the third and dodged a two-out double in the fourth.
Reyes’ final line: 5IP, 7H, 5R, 3SO, 3BB, 2HBP
So were the scouts there to look at Reyes? Rolen? One of the A’s?
