STL Post-Dispatch: Mulder is set to start again

The Cardinals rejected the notion that Mark Mulder’s return to the starting rotation is an experiment, saying the lefty will be starting Wednesday because they think he can stay in the role permanently. The time for testing has passed.

“Hopefully he’ll pitch good enough to help us. We have to pitch him to see,” pitching coach Dave Duncan said. “He’s got a history. He’s a starting pitcher, and we need to get him out there with a chance to start. We’ve got two months left.”
...
The opponent for his return start is also a doozy — at Philadelphia’s cozy ballpark against a lineup that leads the National League in homers off lefthanded pitchers and is second in slugging, at .465.
...
“He has prepared himself to start,” general manager John Mozeliak said. “We look at what he is capable of doing when he’s right and what we need, it’s pretty exciting to put that type of arm back in our rotation.”

Mulder gave up 48 hits in 34.1 minor league innings this year. He has given up 4 hits in 1.1 IP in the majors. This isn't going to end well for him.

He hit the first Cardinal HR at Busch III, so at least he's got that going for him.

He also gave up the first HR in Busch III (Bill Hall).

I wonder what the over/under on his IP should be for that start...

I say 3, and I'll take the under....

Sunk costs, people! Sunk costs!

I'd be so glad to be wrong, but for now I have to agree with the wisdom of the above crowd. Somebody pass out the butter.

Honestly I'm not the type of guy who worries about how the guy pitched in the minors on a rehab stint, the pitch selection isn' about getting the guys out, but to evaluate how he is pitching.

Having said that, Mulder hasn't impressed me on his return to the majors, and I'm not sure how starting him now proves anything. What needs to happen is let him get a secondary start being the first guy out of the pen when you use Boggs or Thompsn or Reyes or whoever, and have it planned out beforehand, and see if he goes three innings of acceptable pitching.

I must concur. Anyone else ever accomplish that?
