Factoring match-ups into his decision, La Russa expects Edmonds to start tonight against Roy Oswalt and Sunday against Jason Jennings, noting that both are righthanded.
“The way I look at it, we’ve got two left to play this weekend against righthanders. So I don’t know if it makes sense to play him tonight and sit him against one of the two righthanders when you’ve got a Taguchi who doesn’t match up as well against righthanders,” La Russa said. “Now, if you think he can play all three, that’s another question. But that’s not what I was told.
“Maybe if he didn’t complain about his shoulder, his foot and his hammy barking a little bit, maybe the training staff wouldn’t say he should play only two out of three.”

1. Shibal Posted: April 07, 2007 at 03:39 PM (#2328292)Hell, in beer-league softball I make sure I let someone know if he is changing positions or down in the batting order before I make out the lineup. Just common courtesy dictates that.
Hardly an unreasonable reaction from someone who watches Taguchi play a lot.
And I don't fault Edmonds for being peeved. He's earned the right to expect that TLR will talk to him about something like this beforehand.
Putting So Taguchi into the lineup is, by definition, never the right decision.
While that's certainly the case, it's WJ's fault for not providing TLR with a better sub for Edmonds than Taguchi. If the trainers say that Edmonds must be rested once every three games, then TLR absolutely should bench Edmonds against left-handed starters as much as possible. While Taguchi is an inferior option, the marginal drop in production is minimized when facing a left-handed starter.
