StL Today: La Russa, Pujols will appear at Washington rally

“Gateway Arch showing rust and decay”...and you ain’t ####### kidding.

Cardinals first baseman and three-time NL Most Valuable Player Albert Pujols will be among several honorees at a highly publicized and potentially politically charged Saturday morning rally expected to draw more than 20,000 to The Mall.

Organized by Fox News talk show host Glenn Beck and featuring former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, the “Restoring Honor” rally is scheduled to take place at the base of the Lincoln Memorial on the 47th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

Beck, who met Pujols at Busch Stadium before a June appearance at Chaifetz Arena, is promoting the event as an apolitical celebration of the First Amendment and the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, scheduled to introduce Pujols, insisted Thursday that he and Pujols are attending only after receiving assurances that the event is not a thinly disguised political rally.

Some liberal critics have portrayed the three-hour event as a platform for the conservative Tea Party movement.

“I made it clear when we were approached: I said, ‘If it’s political, I wouldn’t even approach Albert with it.’ I don’t want to be there if it’s political,” La Russa said.

Zippy's 2nd term ended with Obama's inauguration, I'm pretty sure.

corresponding victories by the straitjacket escapees known as tea partiers

How did the modern tea party movement morph into this? I stopped in at an early tea party protest at my state capital during lunch on tax day in 2009. It was a civil protest about the increase in government spending and increase in federal and state government taxation. Both the 2009 stimulus bill and the 2008 stimulus bill that was passed and then signed by President Bush were topics at the protest, it was not a Rep against Dem issue. I'm not sure what the demographics of this event was in terms of left-center-right breakdown, but I never felt like it was a Republican rally vs the new Dem white house and congress. It was a very on point form of dissent which had enough discontent for both major parties.

Since then, either my media portrayal or by the Tea-party participants radical actions, more than likely a combination of both, it has morphed into this crazy anti-Obama anti-Democrat movement. From what I saw 16 months ago, I never thought I would see tea-party protesters become a collective group of birthers, putting up billboards comparing Obama to Hitler, claiming Obama is a Muslim sympathizer, or any other idiotic action like that. Tea party had a message and a point but now it's just morphed into idiocracy.

But the Tea Party had to actually cancel its convention earlier this summer because nobody signed up for it. Everyone involved here will inflate or deflate the numbers to fit their political position, and there's no way to ever get a truly accurate count, but I'm guessing Back will get about 10 percent of what he's hoping for.

As a matter of statistical counting, keep in mind (going forward) that there are three distinct events going on in DC this weekend. Beckapalooza, a counter protest to Beckamania, and a celebration of women's suffrage. Watch for conflation of statistics/attendees.
   106. Yeaarrgghhhh Posted: August 27, 2010 at 04:11 PM (#3627485)
Oh, I get it. They're lies because he has a massive audience, huge influence, and because Obama is teetering precariously over the abyss. And you want to defend your golden god. I understand. Lies. Sure.

No, they're lies because his claims (and yours) that Obama is some sort of radical loon whose policies are destroying America are obviously and objectively untrue. The reason Beck and the tea partiers are extremists is not because they dislike and disagree with the President, it's because they are incapable of disagreeing with the President and his supporters in any sort of rational or reasonable way.
   107. zachtoma Posted: August 27, 2010 at 04:11 PM (#3627486)
And since when is almost everything Beck says a lie? Isn't that rather in the eye of the beholder? Those of you who have known me long enough on Primer realize that I know far more about American 20th century political history than any other poster on this site, and I happen to know that Beck's fascination/obsession with the historical & intellectual roots of Progressivism isn't actually far off the mark AT ALL. It seems hilariously esoteric, but it really does mark the true root of the modern mixed-mode welfare state we currently have. So I don't see the lies. I see hysteria occasionally (for sure), I see over-exaggerations and improper weighting in some of his arguments, sure...but the lies? Where are those?

a. since when is whether or not something is a lie in the "eye of the beholder"? The fact that that statement could even be made speaks to the overwhelming success of the populist Republican media machine's strategy over the past two years.

b. if you are interested in the historical & intellectual roots of Progressivism, then surely you understand they emerged largely as a redress to the pervasive societal ills of the Gilded Age, which remains the only period of American history that rivals the present for widespread inequality and lack of social mobility. This "welfare state" you speak of has been rolled back, and it has given us another era of plutocracy.

Other off-topic threads haven’t been moved for the simple reason that they don’t require constant babysitting - there’s little chance a thread that turns into Star Wars or classic movies is going to have a couple of people throw bombs and then get 100 posts of people yelling at each other in an hour.

And... check.
   110. Answer Guy Posted: August 27, 2010 at 04:12 PM (#3627491)
And you want to defend your golden god. I understand.

All I can think of now is the scene from _Almost Famous_ where the Billy Crudup character, under the influence of one drug or another, declares that he's a golden god and jumps into a swimming pool from a rooftop.

Obama is not any sort of golden god. The party he leads is so corrupt, lousy, ineffectual and spineless that I somewhat resent having to vote for nearly everyone it fields, simply because the alternative is supporting a national suicide cult.

As for Pujols, yeah, this is a head scratcher. If I bothered me that much that pro jocks tend to be right-wingers than I probably wouldn't follow sports at all. But there's definitely a psychological difference between something I vaguely understand and something I'm forced to confront. He has a right to associate himself with whomever he wants to associate...but I have also right to put him on my #### list as a result. And the "non-polticial" thing strains any sort of plausible deniability, or he's really, really, naive.

Dayn is from Mississippi, so if anything such a move would almost certainly raise their standard of living. (As a native of Arkansas & resident of Alabama, I acknowledge that the same would be true of my own family if it still existed.)

How it became what it is now: four words, two of them stuck together.

The house I more or less grew up in (to the extent that I ever "grew up," of course) in the southwest corner of Arkansas & then sold for something like $3,000 in 1988, a few years after my mother died, was razed & replaced with a trailer. I haven't decided whether this places me one level above or one level below trailer trash.

(I've never been associated with a pickup in an ownership capacity, which probably figures into the calculus ... though I'm not sure exactly how.)

Really?

More so than the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada was crushed in 1993?
They went from 169 (of 295) seats in parliament (in 1988) to only 2 (of 295).
They were the ruling party of the nation, and ended up losing official status as a political party!

The LDS theology merely suffers from the misfortune of having a significant portion of its founding mythology/doctrine originating from the 19th century, making elements of it more easily subject to falsification than is the case for religions, sects, or cults that originated in ancient (or, in the case of Islam, early medieval) times.

It's hard to classify Beck as fringe when his show pulls in such a large number of viewers. Clearly a large group of people care about what he has to say.

Becks's show gets 1.7 million to 2 million viewers a day. Nickelodeon's "iCarly" reruns get 8 million. Spongebob Squarepants gets 5 million for shows that have been rerun into the ground. MTV's "Jersey Shore" gets just under 5 million. Judge Judy gets 6 to 7 million. "Inside Edition" gets 4.5 million. Dr. Phil gets 3 to 4 million.

With narrowcasting ruling the day, 2 million viewers certainly doesn't make Beck a flop. But if you took a couple of the Fox/CNBC/CNN political personality shows, combined their audiences, and transferred the result to a major network, it would be cancelled because of low ratings. The noise these shows generate greatly outweighs their general popularity. It's kind of like these "Why Obama is Raping the Liberty Bell and What You Can Do to Stop It"/"Conservatives, Child Cannibals, and the H1N1 Virus: the Three-Headed Cabal Exposed"-type books that ZOOM TO #1 ON THE BEST-SELLER LIST based on not enough sales to fill in the empty seats at a Pirates game.

Boxing history in general, and the changes in boxing technique from the bare-knuckle era to the small-glove era in very specific.

Also functional changes in cerebromicrovasculature associated with various pathologies, but that's a thread-killer to be sure.

What kind of numbers does Beck pull in compared to other Political opinion shows? Clearly more people watch reality TV than even good politcal driven shows. So claiming Beck is fringe when compared to spongebob, is making the claim that all cable news shows are fringe.

The noise these shows generate greatly outweighs their general popularity.

But the noise is generated by the same networks the shows run on. If no one is watching the shows, then who is watching the noise?

My interest in boxing started fading about the time that Muhammed Ali's career did, but when I was a kid the local library had an oversized boxing history that I found absolutely fascinating, though at some point the volume went away. I need to do a bit of Googling to see if I can find out what it was & obtain a copy; about all I remember is that the dustjacket was mostly red, & that it must've come out in the mid-'60s, because I think Ali was still Cassius Clay & still the champ when the narrative ended. (Edit: It was probably the second [or thereabouts] edition of An Illustrated History of Boxing, which I see has been continuously in print since '59, but since I can't find any images of earlier dustjackets I'm not positive of that.)

(And after that I need to find out the name of that art-filled book on pirates that we had in our elementary school library. And the book on dinosaurs that I discovered in the public library circa 3rd grade. And the author of that series of juveniles that featured a kids team with a pitcher nicknamed "Fireball" who had a near-encyclopedic of baseball history ...)

What's the theory on how many supercontinents have exists in the 4.5 billion year history of Earth? This is not a test, I'm just curious to ask an expert. I remember in high school basic science talked about just 1 (Pangaea). I saw a show a few weeks ago on nat-geo or discovery and they were talking about how several have formed and split in the planet's history, but really gave no indication towards even an estimation on the number of times it's happened.

For some reason, plate tectonics and their involvement with the history of Earth fascinate me.

Ok I get it. Every political opinion show on cable news applies to only a fringe audience, nothing like that is mainstream.

Well then why do people in the mainstream get upset when those idiots say something stupid? If only a few million people watch about those type of shows, then why should the masses care?

#164 - the top ranked cable news show is the O'Reilly Factor. Beck has about 2/3 as many viewers as O'Reilly. Beck has one of the top rated shows on cable news.

Perhaps the "noise" created by these shows is because of a great deal of churn? If Beck has 2 million viewers for the show, that could mean 2 million devoted followers who watch every day, or 1 million devoted followers and another 30 million people who watch once in a while. And then perhaps because of cross-promotion on Fox that raises his profile - all the top rated shows are on Fox. And then perhaps the "noise" is accentuated by the fact that these cable news guys have become the news, so Glenn Beck interviewing Keith Ellison is on EVERY cable news show.

But I'm speculating. I do find it strange.

Oh, and notice I said nothing about the politics.

Beck's simply a former shock jock who realized that, while the niche of radio shock jock was filled pretty well, the niche of an insane right-wing demagogue who dog-whistlely calls for armed revolution of fat white people reclaiming their country from the minorities and other groups that they're scared of, wasn't. And now he's got money coming out the ass from book deals and radio contracts

Him and Ann Coulter; I'm sure both are Republicans, but I'd bet they each believe, oh, about 30% of the #### they say. The rest is pablum for the masses.

The comments of Esoteric here are a depressing reminder of how the increasing inequality in our country has made us a more unhappy country.

Well, perhaps. I like Esoteric, but politically he is and has always been a right-wing partisan hard-on underneath the nice manners. He is more or less on the same page, in his view of issues and pols, and his personal attitude about the values, ideas, and character of liberals, as Joey B is. On Election Night, Esoteric referred to Obama's victory as the "Death of America", so I don't know if he is a real yardstick for what you are talking about.

I am not sure that we are any more of an "unhappy country" than we once were, but IMO what the 24/7/365 wired media digital era does is magnify whatever it is that people are into, so things seem more intense. The internet and cable etc. allow people to obsess even more intensely on whatever it is that catches their attention, be it porn, indie rock, Star Trek, sabermetrics, or partisan politics. So what happens now is that as soon as the new guy takes office, you have about 50% of the country acting like it's a nightmare, it's "un-American", we are being "held hostage", and everything is going straight to hell, and you have an entire wing of the media--the Becks and the Limbaughs and the Olbermanns--whose ratings depend on fomenting that. I don't know that this dynamic is any more intense than it was in 1962 or 1853, but it is in our faces much more, due to the technical nature of the media.
