STLtoday - Clement in pursuit of old form

Pitching hurts. Exhibit 1,345,946.

When the doctor began to explain how the wreckage in Matt Clement’s right shoulder resembled the frayed and floppy remnants of a blown tire, the patient told him to stop.

It was ugly. Got it.
...
Clement threw a standard bullpen session, and afterward pitching coach Dave Duncan and team trainers decided to alter

Clement’s schedule to increase his arm strength. Duncan doubts Clement will be ready when the regular season starts, as hoped.

“In all honesty, I will be surprised if he’s ready for opening day,” Duncan said. “And I’m not too sure even if he is ready, we wouldn’t likely have him compete somewhere else just to get him in the swing of things. … He’s behind. How far? Don’t know yet.”

His old form?

You mean to get ahead 1-2, and bounce two breaking pitches at the catcher's shin guards, and then miss high with a fastball? With 90 seconds between pitches?

He is in form; isn't crappy and injured "his form"?

Miklasz seized on this story to trash the front office for not signing Livan Hernandez... Why exactly would an obvious non-contender pay $5 million or more to a guy who'll give you 200 putrid innings instead of rolling the dice on a much cheaper guy who could be a good #2 if he beat the long odds associated with shoulder surgery?

Livan's only had one, maybe two, putrid years - production-wise - in his career and none since 2001 so I think it is a little much to say he WILL be putrid

1.60 WHIP last year with a terrible HR rate. He's putrid, and getting worse by the day.

Clement really gets a bad rap here. In the past six seasons, he had two very good years and one great year with the Cubs, one overall good year with the Sox despite a scary head injury that occurred in the middle of the season, a terrible third of a season cut short by injury and a lost season due to the same injury.

It's not like he's a terrible pitcher or something; he had one major injury, but he's been solid otherwise.

Uh, he was pretty good (and durable) from 02 to mid-05.

That was his form then. This is his form now.

I can only hope.
