Strauss: Theriot gets a rare start

Theriot actually is a riot given the chance.

“The first thing — almost the only thing I heard when I walked into spring training were questions about defense. It never really stopped,” Theriot said. “You make an error in a spring game and then you hear it even louder. At some point, I stopped thinking about making a great play and became more concerned about making a mistake. That’s not how I play. I’ve never played timid — ever. If I messed up, I’d think about making the next play.”

Theriot has moved from shortstop to second base in each of the last two seasons. That does not mean he is prepared to consider himself a right-side defender.

“I don’t think at this point in my career I see myself as a second baseman,” he said. “That said, I have no problem going to play second base. It doesn’t bother me at all.”

The Cardinals led the division until July 27, four days before the Furcal acquisition. Speaking only about his own role, Theriot noted, “When I was playing shortstop we were in first place. I know that. It is what it is.”

Cubs fans thought Ryan was some kind of good luck charm early in the relationship. Seems Theriot is still a believer as to being a carrier of positive mojo

If he could accept being a utility guy Ryan could likely play until he is 40 a la Craig Counsell. But Counsell keeps his mouth shut.

The Royals are 8-3 in games in which I wear my lucky hat.

Cardinals record through 7/27, when they were in 1st place: 55-49, .528
Since then, during which time they've fallen to 2nd place: 28-20, .583

Mr. Theriot, when it comes to defense, you barely have the right to breathe the same air as Mr. Furcal.

salvo:

Anyone who gets in and around 85 wins has a chance in the NL Central. I think Cards management was sensible in trying to build a 90 win team with 85 wins as a fallback. The Wainwright injury, the bullpen and Theriot put them on course for the fallback win total.

That Milwaukee got hot and looks to be on track to win 95 is bad luck.

People who say "It is what it is" should be DFAed.

"When I was playing shortstop, none of my teammates were attacked by moths. I know that."

The Cardinals have never lost a game with me at SS -- you can look it up!

But Counsell keeps his mouth shut.

And bats lefty which doesn't hurt. Using my highly tuned "he's still in baseball?"-backup-MI-ometer, Theriot is closer to Miguel Cairo than Craig Counsell by at least 10 nanometers.

And is a better fielder. Plus, Counsell is 41-years-old and still looks likely to say something like, "Aw, shucks, Mr. Peterman!" at any moment. That has some value.

All points entirely valid and agreed upon.

Theriot is the most self-consciously scrappy wannabe ever.

I really want to see him on the Reds next season.

Very clever ploy!

That is hilarious. Someone should tell Ryan this.

Not breathing the same air as Furcal is probably a good idea anyway. Reduces your chance of spontaneous combustion from the booze fumes.

Harveys,

I would grow an honorary soul patch if Theriot joined either of the Cardinals' NLC rivals. I would dye it red if they made him a starter for 120+ games.

You have no idea the suffering he brings to a fanbase.
