Stubbs struggling to find his groove

Asked if Stubbs might be trying too hard to make an impression, Baker said, “I don’t think so. He is taking too many pitches, taking too many fastballs. That puts you in a strikeout situation.

“Everybody talks about getting deep into a count, but that’s not good for everybody. If you get deep in the count, you have to be a pretty good two-strike hitter,” said Baker. “Even in the minors he was prone to strike out. What’d he have, 104 strikeouts at Louisville?

“We have to keep playing him to see if he is ready to make this jump,” Baker added.

Stubbs, though, has shown amazing range and speed on defense and Baker said, “That was never the question in the first place.”

Dusty Baker wants to turn Stubbs into Willy Tavaras already. Great.

Would that be better or worse than turning him into Corey Patterson?

Or was the problem w/ Tavares that Dusty was trying to turn him into Patterson? THE PLOT THICKENS!

My first thought upon seeing the headline was "Franklin Stubbs?!? Is he coaching somewhere or something?" His name always used to make me chuckle...I always had this mental image of a guy who looks like Ben Franklin but with no arms or legs, just Stubbs.

I was a weird kid.

Stubbs only put up a 713 OPS at AAA this year -- 268/353/360. That's just not good. He had a better year in 2008 but still not something to make you jump up and down. His career minor-league BA is just 269 and, yes, he Kd more than 1 per 4 AB. And he's already 24. He'll be lucky to have Patterson's or Taveras's career.

"Franklin Stubbs?!? Is he coaching somewhere or something?"
Yeah, hitting coach for Inland Empire, the Dodgers' Cal League affiliate. He had worked as a hitting coach for years in the Braves' system. Stubbs was the guy Francoeur was sent down to work with, briefly, last season.

Just 10 minutes ago, I was tripping down my Dodgers memory lane and looked up the BB-Ref page for... Franklin Stubbs.
Lasorda gave him 25 starts in center field? Really?

Bobby Valentine gave Pete Incaviglia 37 CF starts!
