Matt Gelb @MattGelb
In sending Maikel Franco back to minors and keeping Sean Rodríguez on bench, Gabe Kapler said, “at this point performance really matters.” But performance from Phillies bench has been among NL’s worst all season. Also, because of more strict rules enforced by MLB, Franco must spend all 10 days of his optional assignment in minors even though the minor-league seasons end before that. So he can return to majors Sept. 5 Link to article in The Athletic $$$

Franco must stay down in the minors even though the minors stop playing? So this is really a restriction on him being added to the 25-man roster? It just sounds weird the way it's phrased in the tweet.

I believe a demoted player can be reactivated immediately if anyone hits the IL.

True, but he's saying Franco must stay down in the minors the entire 10 days which spans beyond the end of the minor league season. But if the minor league season ends and the September call-ups can play in the Bigs, then why couldn't he? There's nothing to do down there any more!

Phillies water coolers, however, are quite relieved to have him nearby on the bench less often.

ha ha ha ... 2 outs, 2 strikes, yadi is fooled on a breaking ball in the dirt, but he actually fouls it on the bounce. next pitch he hits a 2-run single. gio gonzalez looks like he wants to kick something.

uh oh ... angel hernandez is behind the plate. dan points this out, and says 'buckle up.'

Lehigh is out of the playoffs, so I think Franco can come up Tuesday. Teams sometimes send their players down to like rookie ball at the end of August so they can come up a day or two earlier.

the cards came ready today. putting up 6 runs so far in the second.

nice cushion for waino, hope he can exploit that.

da-yum, i fell asleep in the third, i jolt awake and they are only in the 4th inning, waino is out after 90 pitches, bases loaded and the game is two hours old.

A's jumping all over the Royals in Kansas City, 10-2 in the top of the 4th.

AL Player of the Week Mark Canha is 2-2 with 2 runs scored. Coming into tonight's game, Canha had OPSed over 1.000 since June 7.

Marcus Semien, who has just been going crazy lately, is 2-3 with 6 RBIs. Coming into tonight's game, Semien had OPSed over 1.000 since July 25.

Seth Brown is making his MLB debut with the A's, playing left field. Brown is 2-2; his first big-league hit was a popup to the opposite that nobody could get to, but his family is there and it's very sweet. His second hit, happily, was a solid line drive.

Even Khris Davis got a hit!
Which is good, because if he's going to make it back to .247 he'll have to hit about .370 the rest of the way. That would be fun.

aw geez, i know this is an important game and all, but ...

schildt makes a double switch in the 8th, and now with two outs in the ninth, he's bringing in carlos martinez.

this is with a 10-run lead.

Mariners Keon Broxton ejected for hitting the umpire in the face with his batting glove. He was called out on a strike 3 that was on the outside top corner, but may have looked worse because the catcher was setup inside, and tossed his gloves toward home as he walked away. Probably not deliberate, but he earned his ejection. Otherwise, you might have guys slapping the umpire in the face with their gloves while challenging him to a duel.

Noted home run slugger Sean Rodriguez (see posts 1-4 above) hits the walk-off circuit clout in the 11th inning to win it for the Phillies 6-5 as Bryce Harper exchanges fist bumps with him after he crossed home plate.

A's finally put this one away, final 19-4.

Khris ("Quest for .247") Davis raised his average to .220 with a 3-5 effort including a home run - the Royals third baseman was pitching.

Alex Gordon pitched 1+ innings for the Royals; presumptive 2019 AL MVP Matt Chapman homered off him.

Yankees win 5-4, using only 1 good pitcher, Aroldis Chapman in the 9th. Two HRs by Mike Ford, and another by Gleyber Torres (#33, pretty good for a middle infielder). The record for HRs in a month is now at 64, with 4 games remaining.

EDIT: Forgot about Kahnle, he’s pretty good, too.
