Sydney Morning Herald: Magic’s Dodgers set to step up to plate for SCG spectacular

EARVIN “MAGIC” JOHNSON is set to bring his Los Angeles Dodgers to Sydney to open the 2014 Major League Baseball season.

The negotiations to bring the Dodgers, owned by National Basketball Association Hall of Famer Johnson, are well advanced and their likely opponents will be the Arizona Diamondbacks for a historic clash at the SCG.

I hope the descendants of Joe Quinn throw out the first pitch.

Wonder who the opponent is. I mean, the ones that make the most sense- organizations that generally have Australians- are all in the AL: Oakland, Minnesota, etc. Although, admittedly, with how we now will have year-round interleague, so I guess it'd be possible to do that.

EDIT: Nevermind, TFA says Diamondbacks. Heck, the excerpt says Diamondbacks.

I would not have cared who came - but this is a great choice !! I'll be there

This will be a meet up that goes down as the greatest ever ! 3 days of drinking - 3 hours of sleep - I'm already prepared mentally.

Just a routine long weekend for the Aussies, isn't it?

Yep, those three hours sleep will come in one hit as well.

This is so exciting - hopefully the Rabbitohs are playing in Sydney that weekend as well and the times match - it'll be a blast

I've never thought of Australia as a baseball hotbed, or even lukewarmbed. Did Craig Shipley turn the whole country on to baseball? Why not start the season in China, South Korea or even North Korea (WWE had a huge event there: I suppose attendance was mandatory)? Why not have the Rangers start the season with Darvish pitching in Iran? Have Kermit Roosevelt loose the mascot race instead of Teddy.
