syracuse.com: Made famous by movie, group plans reunion, game at Alliance Bank Stadium

On Saturday, 48 players from the AAGPBL will participate in a reunion game at Alliance Bank Stadium, where they’ll play a local softball team, Wings Over Syracuse. Tony Wade, Wings Over Syracuse’s coach, says his team is largely made up of local teachers and social workers.

The AAGPBL league members, most of whom are in their 70s or older, will have an active role during the game, according to Shelly McCann, an associate member who is organizing the trip to Syracuse.

Former league players Catherine “Katie” Horstman and Jeneane Lesko, both 77, will be on the field. McCann also says that Maybelle Blair, 85, will serve as manager.

“A League of Their Own” movie actresses Megan Cavanagh and Patti Pelton will also be at the game. They portrayed Marla Hooch and Marbleann Wilkenson, respectively.

And the first pitch will be thrown by Nadia Diaz, an 11-year-old pitcher in Southside American Little League, who recently struck out 19 batters in a six-inning game. Who will accuse her of “throwing like a girl”?
