T.J. Simers: Mike Scioscia needs to do something, so why not lighten up?

Hi everybody
I’m T.J. Simers of the Trolls
In L.A. we just started a new dance
Called the Lighten Up

Angels Manager Mike Scioscia is not getting the job done.

He has been bulletproof until now, and maybe as secure as any manager in baseball, but there are now questions about his effectiveness as a leader.

Those who cover the team regularly say the team appears flat and lifeless. How can a team fewer than 20 games into a season be flat?

Isn’t it the manager’s job to make sure such a thing does not happen?

But then Scioscia is nowhere near the carefree, fun-loving manager with the quick quip he was when just starting.

He has become super-sensitive to criticism and protective of his way of handling a team.

As he has gained more security and become more controlling, incredibly he has become more insecure, uptight and tense. No one says he has to be close to his players, and he’s not.

One player called it “Scioscia’s stranglehold” on the team, laughing and saying if Scioscia knew it was him talking, he’d soon be sitting behind closed doors with an angry Scioscia.

As opposed to those other managers who, after finding you were talking #### about them to the media behind their backs, would buy you a steak and a beer.

You know what's coincidental? I was listening to a recording of Archie Bell & The Drells just last night.

Of course not, TJ. After all, he's had to spend a large portion of the intervening period interacting with you...

Has Simers always done the 1-2 sentences per paragraph thing or did he absorb it from Plaschke?

It's an editorial decision.

I will never stop enjoying "short-term slump proves that long-standing player/manager trait is suddenly incompatible with baseball success" articles.

Maybe he's just moping because Mathis was traded.

Scioscia doesn't need to lighten up. Scioscia probably needs to be fired.

As posted in the dugout - Abreu was released.

Someone pointed out that the 1-2 sentence paragraphs looks real different in newsprint in those narrow columns. This is extreme. But the Times (for example) will publish its share of single-sentence paragraphs, even in the heavy Pulitzer bait news features.

What has he done wrong? Did he stick Ervin Santana's head up Ervin Santana's ass? Did he put Takahashi and Jepsen in the bullpen while dumping Rich Thompson? Well, maybe that one, actually. It's not his fault half the team is slumping all at once, both in the box and on the hill.

Clearly, Scioscia and Mickey Hatcher are telling Albert Pujols to not hit, they're telling Ervin Santana to suck and they're convincing the bullpen that it'd be really dramatic to blow a bunch of games in April so that the playoff run seems more exciting. Also, Scioscia needs to run around the field during the 7th inning stretch wearing an inflatable dinosaur while they blast "Born This Way" over the PA to prove he is carefree and fun. If he's not willing to do this - THEY NEED TO PANIC AND CAN HIM. Look how well that panic-button-hitting is working for Boston. They got a new manager that the fanbase is just going crazy for.

I don't think he needs to wear a Dinosaur suit to show how carefree and fun he is.
