Taking Back the Ballparks - Boston Red Sox

OK, let’s face it. Everything tells us this one isn’t going to change. Fenway is just the kind of name we’re looking for in this endeavor, a distinct name with a connection to the neighborhood. And I’m not just saying that because of my lifelong Sox fandom. Fenway’s a legitimate keeper.

And, given the success of TBiA in our second installment, there is a natural tendency to go with what works. So, we’re probably not looking at a lot of real alternatives.

In the event that the status quo is the overwhelming choice, perhaps we can take this thread in a different direction. What would you call the place if you were starting from scratch? Block out the 100-plus years of history of the Fens and come up with the best possible name.

Then, when the vote happens, you can go ahead and vote for Fenway.

Ballpark History

Built: 1912
Capacity: 37,281 (day), 37,731 (night)
Name: Fenway Park (1912-present)
Other ballparks used by club in its current city: Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds 1901-1911
Distinctive Features: How long do we have? The Green Monster, manual scoreboard and that ladder in left; the triangle in center; Pesky’s Pole down in right; the wall in foul territory in left that shoots out toward the diamond, often forcing shortstops to play balls hit down the line; the Citgo sign.

Ballpark Highlights:
In 1912, the year the park opened, the Red Sox won the deciding game 8 here to win the World Series, 4-3-1.

In 1917, Ernie Shore relieved a pitcher, whose days on the mound were close to numbered, after the starter walked the leadoff hitter and got himself ejected. Shore and the Sox caught the leadoff runner for stealing, then he retired the next 26 batters in order in the first perfect game to be later expunged by Fay Vincent’s great no-hitter purge of 1991.

One night after Carlton Fisk’s iconic 12th-inning home run pushed the series to a seventh and deciding game, Joe Morgan’s single in the ninth inning scored Ken Griffey with the winning run for the Big Red Machine in one of the best World Series ever played.

One of the single-greatest collections of baseball talent gathered at the 1999 all-star game, highlighted by the appearance of the greatest Red Sox player of all-time, and the guy my father wanted to name me after before Mom Unacceptable nixed his plans, Ted Williams.

In 2004, the Red Sox began the greatest comeback in the history of history, tying Game 4 with a ninth-inning run off Mariano Rivera then winning the game in the 14th inning on a two-run home run by David Ortiz. It was the impetus to the club’s first World Series title in 86 years.

Nominations are now open.

If this thread goes in the direction I expect it to, we're not going to drag it out over two weeks. We'll shorten the timeline considerably.

Why even bother?

Fenway Park. No reason to change it.

Seconded. Can we just call for a "voice vote" on this one? I move Fenway Park be approved unanimously.

Why even bother?

Because I don't want to be the one who determines which names are worth keeping without a vote, and which ones aren't. Assuming that it goes as expected, we'll either close off nominations in a day or two and vote, or have no vote whatsoever and simply jump to the next team.

Fenway it is obviously. But what would be some other good ones?

Ted WillIams Park - Greatest player in franchise history, genuine war hero, you could do a lot worse.

Yawkey Grounds - Um...no.

Menino Field - Mayor Menino was great for the city and did a lot of work with the club to help the renovations of the ballpark come to fruition.

But yeah...it's Fenway.

Alternate names:
The House That Ruth Left
Bahstahn Ballpahk
James Curley Pavillion
This Is Our Fucking Ballpark

. .... but yeah, it's Fenway.

I make a motion that if there are no objections, "Fenway Park" is retained by unanimous consent.

About the only real purpose of this particular exercise might be to think of alternate names for writers to use when they didn't want to use "Fenway Park" too many times in a paragraph or a story. Something along the lines of "The Millionaires' Lair" might have resonated during the Yawkey era, when newspapers referred to the Red Sox as "The Millionaires", but the point might be lost in an era when most every good ballplayer has a seven or eight figure salary.

Titanic Memorial Park? Maybe someone who has a better immediate idea of what people might have thought in 1911.

But, yeah, Fenway.

WTH is a "Fen" anyway??
   13. Omineca Greg Posted: September 04, 2017 at 02:22 PM (#5525843)
Fenway!

This time I think I'm backing a winner.

One thing that pisses me off about fens, besides how alkali they are, is the Isle of Ely. It's not an isle really, it's surrounded by fens though, despite not being a fen itself. So to promote it to an "Isle" (scare quotes on purpose) is kind of ########.

But I don't like the Isle of Ely for another reason too. Tondbercht right up and gave it to Æthelthryth when they got married, so just in case he died she'd have something to fall back on. And then she never did the deed with him, and he went along with that! He gives her (an admittedly fake) island, and she can't be bothered to give up the goods. He ends up dying, I don't know if he was light in the leggings or if he had a sidepiece or what, but it sounds like a raw deal from his perspective, and on top of that, then they make her the Saint! His Gyrwas privilege didn't do him any good at all.

Not that I'm Gyrwas myself, but first they came for the Gyrwas...

To be fair, there were a lot of eels around the Isle of Ely, so it earns at least one part of its name fair and square.

The BoSox are missing a huge marketing opportunity to tie in the name Fenway Park with the resurgence of a fen-phen derivative. I think it's a winner!

Wicked hahd pahk!

Yes, a fen is a marsh or bog.

They could rename it Bogway Pahk!

Jokes aside...the name suits, everyone knows it, I second the motion to retain "Fenway Park" by unanimous consent.
   18. stevegamer Posted: September 04, 2017 at 09:56 PM (#5526033)
Fenway Park. If this actually goes to a vote, you can pretty much end the series.

The Fens were fed by Longwood Stream, so I vote for Longwood Park.

And I think in the spirit of the exercise, you shouldn't allow votes for the current name. The most challenging part is the most fun.

SoSH, maybe you could add a running boilerplate list to the intros for each of these threads, giving the agreed-upon names for the parks. That way we'd all see them every week and would get used to them and maybe start using them.

Though I don't suppose there will be any playoff games this year at China Basin or Mission Field (were those the winners for SF and SD?)

Maybe not, but if all ballfields had names like Fenway Park instead of StupidCorporateName.com Stadium, this exercise wouldn't even have occurred to anyone.

Is that possibly a jab at the Henry Group? They really turned Fenway into something a lot different than what existed before 2003 or so (the Monster seats were the first real sign). The park has an actual upper deck now, the closure of Yawkey Way and Lansdowne Street before games, turning them into pseudo-concourses, some other stuff.

No, just a mistake in editing. I used the Padres information as a template for this one, and I didn't change the date Petco opened. I've fixed it above.
   35. villageidiom Posted: September 05, 2017 at 12:41 PM (#5526209)
In the results to date, I've taken the liberty of adding links to the discussion thread and the voting thread for each team. Team name links to discussion and ballpark's new name links to the vote. I hope that helps going forward.

I was actually going to suggest Back Bay Ballpark (featuring the Killer B's Outfield!), but like Grounds better. Well done. If it had to be something other than Fenway, I'd go for Back Bay Grounds.

It's adjacent to Back Bay, but I don't think it's in Back Bay. But it's probably close enough.

It seems like Fenway is the obvious choice. If there are no objections, we can approve it without a vote. If anyone feels the need to go through the voting process, speak now.
   48. villageidiom Posted: September 07, 2017 at 07:27 PM (#5528163)
We should go through the vote. I'm not sure we need to, but the only real way to determine if we need to vote is to actually go through the vote and look at the results.
   49. puck Posted: September 07, 2017 at 08:09 PM (#5528171)
Has it ever had another name?
   50. Dag Nabbit at ExactlyAsOld.com Posted: September 07, 2017 at 08:26 PM (#5528174)
We don't need a vote. I don't think I see anyone here saying they'd prefer a different name.
