Taking Back the Ballparks - Giants voting thread

We have selected four potential names as a replacement for the replacement for the replacement for PacBell Park, which, as corporate names go, wasn’t half-bad. They are listed below.

Choose one of the four choices, then add in the full name you prefer. If you like Pacific, but think it should be Pacific Grounds, choose C, then write in the preferred full name.

If you’d like to continue to debate the merits of the four choices, please do so at the nominating thread. Leave this thread just for voting, if you would.

And, it should go without saying that we are restricting this to one vote per Primate. And, just so you know, I’ve got Kobach on speed dial and that SOB is just itching to dig up some irregularities.

A) China Basin
B) Golden Gate
C) Pacific
D) West Bay

Edit: BTF’s winning selection has been boldfaced. It’s China Basin, unencumbered by any park, ballpark, stadium or grounds appendage.

Though I can't place why the name sounds a little off to me. Maybe it suggests something big and breakable. Maybe it just seems sinister, like the setting for some 1940s noir. But it's the most distinctive of the finalists.

I'm assuming that, unlike the China Basin caucus, the people choosing Golden Gate don't mean for that to be a standalone name, so can you please include an appellation with your votes, as Chris Fluit and Baldrick have done with "Pacific Park"?
   14. Jay Seaver Posted: July 31, 2017 at 12:47 PM (#5503360)
C) Pacific Park

Given its setting, I was always easily to hear "Pacific Bell" as the non-corporate "Pacific Belle" in my head, and that's still how I think of it however many name changes later.
   15. Jeff Frances the Mute Posted: July 31, 2017 at 12:55 PM (#5503369)
Pacific Park. These choices are as bland as the official name.

   17. Rockwell Posted: July 31, 2017 at 01:56 PM (#5503445)
Abstain.

Terrible choices. AT&T Park is way better than all four. Pac Bell Park is even more way better. Corporate names aren't the greatest, to be sure, but we're now about 30 years into the era of corporatization of pro sports, making whining about it as a matter of principle kind of pointless. The difference between "Pacific Bell Park" on the one hand, and "Wrigley Field" or "Ebbets Field" or "Comiskey Park" on the other, is essentially meaningless.

I'll write in "Polo Grounds at China Basin." It's orders of magnitude better than all four choices on order, which frankly aren't materially better than Trump v. Hillary.

Lance is correct. We'll vote for a week. We'll open the next team nominating process at the same time.

If anyone is interested in joining me and a few others on the nominating committee, feel free to send me an email through BTF through my SoSH U at work account.

No. The vote will run for a week, closing next Monday at 10 a.m. (BTF time). At about the same time, we'll start the now one-week period of nominations for the next club.

Looks pinned to me, on the Newsstand page. It's not pinned on the home page.

SoSH U - It looks like commenting expires on the 7th, but the thread itself also expires then. When the thread expires the header section disappears. See here for an example of a thread with a missing header. Do you want that to be preserved, and maybe edit it to add the final vote after the thread closes? Just set an expiration date in the future. Let me know if you want me to do it.

Thanks vi. Yes, I see that it's pinned to the newstand page. But the previous one was pinned at the top left corner under featured, which is where I was looking for it. I don't know how that previous one got there.

I changed the thread expiration date, I think.

You know what? I'm gonna change my vote. (No one said I couldn't!)

The more I think about it, the more I get this sense, that conflating the Pacific Ocean with the San Fran Bay may not be a big deal to those of us who don't live there, but would be stupid/annoying to people actually living there. Maybe I'm overthinking this, but it seems off. Plus the China Basin name has grown on me over the last week.

So my vote now:
A) China Basin

Write-in: PacBell.

Twenty years ago, when they changed the name of Candlestick to... whatever the hell it was they changed it to, I decided enough is enough: I would not accept that or any new changes to any ballpark name. All current names were to remain in use, at least for me, and for new parks, the first name given would be permanent.

So PacBell it is and always will be, at least to me. While it's a corporate name, it's a useless but quaint anachronism now, and that's kind of cool. Not as cool as the name of the park the Astros play in (Enron forever!) but much better than... whatever the hell PacBell's official name is now.

So that wraps it up. The choice, by a reasonably narrow margin, for the new name for the ballpark by the bay is China Basin, naked.

If, for any reason China Basin is unable to fulfill its responsibilities (such as I'm the named co-defendant in a copyright infringement suit against BTF Industries by an obscure kitchen sink company), then runner-up Pacific Park will become the selection.

Thanks for participating. The next team will be announced momentarily.

I'm not sure there's ever been a better real life example of the bromide that a camel is a horse designed by a committee -- and that's even before noting that no committee in its right mind would ever propose renaming a camel, "North Africa."
   76. Omineca Greg Posted: August 07, 2017 at 05:38 PM (#5508301)
...no committee in its right mind would ever propose renaming a camel, "North Africa."

We had a camel that we renamed "North Africa."

His original name was Chad, which we all thought was clever, but then 4chan this and Lincoln Park that, and everybody was snickering behind our backs about our camel's name. He was actually getting quite self-conscious about it, they're a lot more sensitive than they look, he went off his water (down to 25 gallons in a sitting...that's dangerous for a camel!) and we knew we had to do something.

So our family had a vote. The first suggestion was Hippo, which seems like a dumb name for a camel, but it turns out there's a place in North Africa named that; after thinking about it, we still thought is was a dumb name, so it was rejected. Then somebody said "Fergie", but I vetoed that one.

"OK Dad, you come up with a name then!"

I said, "Sijilmasa" because I think it's really pretty, and I'm a sucker for any words with three or more dotted letters in a row, but they weren't down with my hijinks.

My wife suggested " ⵜⴰⵎⴰⵣⵗⴰ" which is nice, we all agreed, but when we want to get a custom camel tag made, Petcetera's machine didn't support Berber, and I guess we could have got an ear tatoo instead, but...no...you wouldn't believe how much it costs to sedate a camel.

So, "North Africa" it was. I agree, it's an underwhelming name, but we were in our right mind when we chose it. Sometimes compromise is like that.

My son is home for the Summer, so he's keeping me abreast of memes, social media trends, and other assorted internet folderol of the last twenty-five years; you know, the stuff I normally avoid because I don't know anything about it.

Don't worry, come September, your regular programming of hippie punching, Velvet Underground jokes, and pâtisserie related obscurities** will be returning, as scheduled.

**This one couldn't wait until September, because honestly, it would keep me up at night wondering how much day old brioche you guys could be wasting.
