Taking Back the Ballparks - Phillies Voting Thread

A nomination process that turned in about as many gag suggestions (I think) as real ones didn’t leave the voting committee a whole lot of choices, but we managed to come up with these options for a replacement for Citizens Bank Ballpark.

As always, choose one.

1) Ben Franklin Field
2) Citizens Park
3) Declaration Field
4) Independence FIeld
5) Liberty Park

2. Citizens Park

Not a great bunch. That works and has some connection to the current park.

5 Liberty Park

(I'd prefer Liberty Field, but that isn't an option.)

I abstain, as I think Fanatic Field is better than all of these, but I'll respect the nomination process enough not to vote for a name that didn't make the cut.

Somehow this set of 5 feels weak, given the nominations. I thought there were other better options in the nomination thread, but at least there are no glaring issues with things identically named.

Of the choices, it's got to be
2. Citizens Park

I would have liked it too, but the name has been taken for the last 122 years. Link

C'mon people! Get out and vote. Turnout is so low, we could be going all Serbian here.

I don't really care who you vote for, but I'll tell you why I voted for Declaration Field.

I've never been to Philadelphia. However, my wife went there last year for a conference. She didn't really have much foreknowledge of what it would be like. These conferences often take her to places she would never go otherwise, one year it was Grand Rapids, the year before that Fresno. She's a an open-minded, well adjusted person, so despite sometimes going to places that aren't traditionally touristy, she always comes back with cool stories and trinkets. I think she had put Philadelphia in that category, just an anonymous big American city.

But it turned out, she loved it!

The thing that made the biggest impression on her were all the physical manifestations of the Declaration of Independence. Obviously, it's not a big part of Canadian History, so we don't know much about it. As a visitor though, she said that citizens' enthusiasm for the Declaration was really infectious, and even if Canadians often find American patriotism a little off-putting, there was something about seeing just regular everyday people's pride in this document, that's so important in America, but really also to the world, that was exhilarating to her. Not just a vague idea of "America", which can be put into so many contexts that it seems like it's used as a con-job sometimes, but the actual concrete ideas of what the nation should be about. That's probably a tourist's perspective more than a local person's; I don't know if it comes into play for people who spend every day there, but my wife is excited to maybe go back one day and take it all in, instead of a few stolen moments in the middle of a very dry conference.

That's why I voted for Declaration Field. To me, it's the truest and most direct name exemplifying what my wife felt when she in Philadelphia.

I'm not electioneering, all those names are a tribute to that, so vote for the one you think sounds the best or you'd be the most comfortable using. But vote...it's part of your heritage, pick the one that sounds best to you, and when you do, celebrate a bit; it's something worth celebrating.

With the holiday, we're going to extend voting through Wednesday.

And 3) Declaration Field.

Fine, I’ll vote. I actually lived in South Jersey for two years, and I have nothing but fond memories of Philadelphia.

I like

The Suncoast Dome vote seems to have disappeared, as I discovered while searching for the list of upcoming votes.

Anyway, having no real affinity for any of these names, I turned to my most trusted adviser, and after explaining to him that, while brilliant, his suggestion of Franklin Field was a nonstarter, he chose Declaration Field on account of its being "most original" among the possibilities.

Well, that's it. Citizens Park is the choice, half-hearted as the turnout was.

We'll resume Monday with the Mariners.
