Tampa Bay Rays promote LHP Jonny Venters

The greatest story of perseverance in baseball history has added another chapter.

The Tampa Bay Rays have called up left-handed pitcher Jonny Venters from Triple-A Durham.

Jonny Venters last pitched in a major league game on October 5th, 2012 while he was still a member of the Atlanta Braves.

This is either going to be a feel good story, or he's going to literally explode on the mound.

Remember when the Braves had an unstoppable bullpen? Venters was a part of it (his job was the 8th inning?). Realizing how long ago that was makes me feel old.

Good for Venters though. Looks like he was out of baseball entirely for 13, 14, 15. 4IP in A+ in 16. This is a very unlikely story.

Dozens of people spontaneously combust each year. It's just not really widely reported.

He's probably got an ex-girlfriend somewhere that would consider the word "and" more appropriate than "or."

Jokes aside good for him. That's a pretty inside ride. Did anyone see him pitch? How did he look?

205 ERA+ in heavy-duty relief in 2010-11

his previous team, the 2012 Braves, also featured Chipper Jones, Eric Hinske, Reed Johnson, Lyle Overbay, Tim Hudson, the late Tommy Hanson, Ben Sheets, Livan Hernandez, and Miguel Batista.

so he's been gone a while

Jose - a bit of video here. He was a LOOGY, threw four pitches, looks like he got Davis on an 83 mph curve. Only the out pitch in the video.

EDIT - swapped in better clip w. three pitches. video is in the interview clip.

His first go-round with Atlanta he threw this sliding cutting *thing* as a LHP to LHBs that... I don't know, man. Laws of physics were optional when it was working for him. Every time he threw it I expected his arm to snap in two on the spot.

He had TJ surgery after that 2012 season. He popped the elbow again while rehabbing that first surgery. The Braves released him and he picked up with, I want to say maybe KC, where he had another surgery and started rehab. And it popped *again.* Dude was originally a shortstop who couldn't cut it above A-ball with the bat, so he told them he'd learn how to pitch relief. He's the absolute walking definition of a baseball lifer.

He was a left-handed-throwing shortstop?

Good for him! He, O'Flaherty, and Kimbrel were all devastating that year. 1.66 ERA in 238 innings between them.

Is that true he was originally a SS, as a lefty?

EDIT: coke.

According to B-Ref he has never played shortstop as a pro. Maybe in high school?

Good for him. Even if he was a Barve, I really enjoyed his pitching. Game was over with he, O'Flaherty and Kimberly in that bullpen.

In fact per b-r, he never played any field position in pro ball. In 23 minors PAs, he did hit a respectable 4-18 with a double and two walks though.
