“Right now I’m comfortable with [BJ Upton] at second base,” Manager Joe Maddon said Thursday. “I think he’s done a nice job.”
That sense of defensive security might be all it takes to have Jorge Cantu playing in Durham rather than in New York next week.
...
Utility infielder Brendan Harris seems assured a roster spot, leaving just one opening for two men who have played important roles for the Rays in recent years - Cantu and Jonny Gomes… [With] the presence of potential second basemen Upton, Wigginton and Harris on the roster, Cantu could very well be left out.
...
“I’m more comfortable than I’ve been all spring,” Upton said. “I’ve got to keep going this way.”
Between Upton’s defensive improvement and the way he has looked at the plate, he just might have won himself a regular job.
“I think his bat’s gotten better; he’s taking much better swings, much more aggressive - the ball’s coming harder off of his bat,” Maddon said. “I just see a greater sense of confidence with him.”
