Tampa Tribune: Longoria to DL with wrist fracture

The Rays have placed Evan Longoria on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right wrist and recalled outfielder Justin Ruggiano from Durham.

Longoria was hit by a pitch Thursday night in Seattle and did not play in the final three games of the Mariners series. X-rays taken immediately after he was injured showed no fracture, and Longoria said as recently as Sunday afternoon that he was feeling better and hoped to play in Tuesday’s game at Oakland.

His disabled list stint is retroactive to Aug. 8… For the time being, Willy Aybar and Ben Zobrist likely will get the bulk of time at third base.

In other news, the Rays are apparently negotiating to acquire Gary Sheffield from the Tigers (I've heard it's on a waiver claim). Sheffield seems to be pushing for the trade. Bad idea, I think.

Damn, that really sucks. I'm a Yankees fan, but I still don't think they can make up the 8.5 games. This mainly just means that Boston's chances of passing them went up.

If it weren't for the fact that Sheffield is under contract for 2009 ($14M), it might be worth considering on the off-chance that he can rebound and have a hot couple of months. But he hasn't been worth $14M/yr since he was a Brave.

Updated Tampa Tribune:

A second look at third baseman Evan Longoria's sore right wrist revealed a non-displaced fracture that was mistaken for an old injury in the initial X-rays taken after he was hit by a pitch Thursday night.

He likely will miss about three weeks, according to Rays executive vice president Andrew Friedman.

Making matters worse, the Rays could determine by today that Carl Crawford needs to undergo surgery to repair the tendon problem in his right hand that forced the All-Star left fielder to the disabled list Sunday. Such a procedure wouldn't necessarily end his season, but likely would sideline him well into September.

For a National League player like Giles, 27 teams would have to pass before the Rays had a crack at him, which is why Friedman on Monday characterized his team's chances of making a significant waiver deal as "extremely unlikely."

The only other outside alternative for the Rays would be to sign a free agent. Asked specifically Monday about Barry Bonds, Friedman said, "I'm not going to address that."

A player such as Kenny Lofton, who would be far more useful defensively, would seem a more likely fit. He apparently rebuffed an offer from Tampa Bay during spring training, but no one could have predicted then where the Rays would be now.
