Tampa Tribune: Who gets bumped when Kaz returns?

LHP Scott Kazmir will come off the disabled list and pitch Saturday or Sunday against the Marlins, and an announcement on whom he will replace on the roster and in the rotation is imminent.

Manager Joe Maddon reiterated Thursday the decision is complicated by the fact RHP Chad Bradford is ready to rejoin the bullpen.

“We’re discussing it right now, and we’ll have an announcement today,” Maddon said after the Rays’ 10-4 victory against the Phillies on Thursday night. “We still have not made up our minds.”

RHP Jeff Niemann was supposed to start Saturday and LHP David Price on Sunday. If both remain in the rotation, Kazmir, who went on the DL on May 22 to heal a right quad strain and work on his mechanics, could bump them back one start.

Bradford, who had elbow surgery before the season, was scheduled to make another appearance at Triple-A Durham on Saturday. Maddon said he could be recalled before then.

The Rays’ options for creating a spot in the rotation for Kazmir include sending Andy Sonnanstine or Price to Durham or moving Sonnanstine or Niemann to the bullpen.

Is this a serious question? I don't know what he has done in the last two weeks or so but Sonnanstine had an ERA over 7 last I checked.

Not much better. He's bending, but not breaking. 5.01 ERA in June. He held together after a horrendous first inning last night. At this point I think I'd rather give Sonnanstine a few more shots at it before sending him to the pen. Niemann doesn't look like much.

Moot because my gut says Kazmir has another DL stint in him in 09.

Talk about burying the lede... The important news is this:
RHP Chad Bradford is ready to rejoin the bullpen

Price to the pen where he can close. Kazmir back in until he gets hurt again. Sonnanstine is too hittable and goes to the minor or gets traded if he has options. Wade Davis gets called up and inserted into the rotation; Davis is lighting up AAA over his last 4 or 5 starts.

Price has no business in the bullpen. Either he goes to AAA to start, or he stays in the ML rotation. I don't wish the Joba "will he start/relieve?" nonsense on another fanbase.

Amen, any suggestion otherwise is nonsense. The Rays don't need a closer either, they do need bullpen help, but they shouldn't overpay for some shiny saves.
