Taveras still out, probably won’t make team

Prized outfield prospect Oscar Taveras, who had right ankle surgery last season, is sidelined indefinitely with a tight hamstring in the same leg. And Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said Taveras won’t come north with the team if he can’t show he can be 100 percent and play appreciably by the end of camp in just more than two weeks, which seems unlikely.

I am shocked, shocked! to learn that a top prospect won't be going north with the team to start his service clock.

He more than likely wouldn't have gone north if he was able to play, but considering he's been able to get into one game and then promptly got injured again, there was no doubt he wasn't going to make the team. Beyond service clock issues, it's best for the team anyway to have Taveras spend a month in the minors so that they can work on their logjam in the outfield (Currently having 4 outfielders all probably worthy of everyday playing time) This gives time for Craig or Bourjos to get their annual injury and open up a spot for Taveras.

The Cardinals generally have not played cute games with service time. Miller and Rasmus are the most recent top prospects for the Cardinals, and Rasmus made his major league debut on an opening day (a year after a mediocre season at AAA), and Miller started the 2012 season on the major league roster after a September call-up the year before.

I was mainly being facetious -- given the injury and the logjam this was a quite obvious move.
