TB Rays: Good or bad, strikeouts a real problem

“You want to cut (strikeouts) down and make the defense get you out,” Zobrist said.

But Zobrist added it’s easy to say and much harder to accomplish.

“The pitchers are good. They’re real good” he said. “There are a lot of strikeouts across the league. Look at the amount of strikeouts our pitchers have against other teams. Playing in this division and playing in the major leagues in general is very difficult. That’s why there are so many strikeouts.”

...“For me the strikeout belong in different barrels,” Maddon said. “Sometimes a strikeout is no big deal. Other times it’s more of a big deal. With a runner on third base and less than two outs, a strikeout is not a good play. With nobody on and two out a strikeout is not bad because you’re trying to drive the ball. Maybe a runner on first base and two outs, a strikeout is not a bad play because you’re trying to drive a runner in from first base.”

Good: Striking out as opposed to hitting into a rally ending double play and having the next guy come up with the big hit.

Bad: The next guy also strikes out.

Thanks to HY.
