TBT: Rays sign Yunel Escobar to two-year extension

Though Rays executive VP Andrew Friedman said a driving force of the offseason plans was keeping the infield intact, extending SS Yunel Escobar wasn’t on his radar.

As much as the Rays love Escobar, he was under contract through 2015 (a favorable $5 million club option). But Escobar, 31, approached Friedman a few weeks into spring training and made clear his “strong desire” to stay longer.

...

Friedman said the team took a “calculated risk” on Escobar, who was suspended for three games in 2012 for wearing eye-black stickers with a gay slur written on them.

But Friedman said it has worked out “as good as we could have asked for,” with Escobar a Gold Glove finalist last year, contributing offensively and bringing an infectious enthusiasm.

2015: $5 million
2016: $7 million
2017: $7 million club option/$1 million buyout

That seems like a really good deal.

He has had his issues for sure but if he can be happy, drama-free, and continuously successful anywhere it will be here. Plus even his worst year by bWAR (2010) was 2.3, his position and defense make him a credible starter even when his offense is down.

I'm still often surprised by the value (per bbref WAR anyway) of guys like Escobar with an OPS in the high 600s. OTOH by the end of this offseason I've gotten used to the idea that $13 million just ain't what it used to be in baseball anymore. So this deal kinda seems surprisingly low and high at the same time, if that makes any sense.

A Google search for "Yunel Escobar attitude" turns up 13,600 results so it's good to see that he enjoys playing in St. Pete and Friedman and Maddon want to keep him around.

Hutchison has no control today- two walks and a hit batsman and he's not even done with the first inning.

Whereas Hutcheson is out of control every day.

A search for "Jason Epstein attitude" turns up 14,600,000 results!

13,600 actually appears to be a very small number, if you Google (random non-famous MLB player) attitude you tend to get a lot more. Even someone like Dayan Viciedo, a similarly unusual name in the US, gets a lot more hits.

Clearly, you must be thinking of another Jason Epstein.

OTOH, "Jim Wisinski attitude" is also a bigger deal (20,100 results) than Yunel.

I've always thought that Escobar is one of the more underrated players in baseball. I don't miss him so much now that the Braves have Andrelton, who's better, but he wasn't on the horizon when the team traded Yunel away - it was a silly, shortsighted move and they ended up playing Alex Gonzalez at short for two years because of it.

Yunel Escobar is 31 already? That surprises me for some reason.

The "attitude" search can be misleading. A search for '"jose altuve" attitude' (32,000 hits) leads to a lot of sentences like this:
Mills, who was the bench coach for the Red Sox before joining the Astros, said Altuve's play and attitude remind him a lot of Pedroia.

Seems like a bargain to get a legitimate starter for $7M these days. I'm surprised any SS would take themselves off the market when Jeter is done after this season and Hanley Ramirez is a free agent. The top two spenders might be looking for SS this upcoming offseason.

Think YE was already under contract for 2015.

Happy for Yunie. He got Good Ole' Boyed out of Atlanta but keeps plugging away and cashing checks. The Rays continue to be smart, nothing new there.

Yes, they guaranteed his 2015 option and gave him one for 2017.
