Teams set 40-man rosters ahead of Rule 5 Draft

With only 40 spots on each organization’s roster, there are some very tough decisions for teams to make this time of year as to which prospects to protect.

The deadline to make those choices is Monday at 8 p.m. ET. Some moves have already been made, but that’s the timetable for all teams to figure out who lands a coveted 40-man spot and who is left unprotected. The latter group will be exposed to selection by the 29 other teams in the Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 14 at the Winter Meetings in Orlando.

The Yankees made a few deals to avoid just losing some players they couldn't fit on their 40-man, and
picked up some Ohtani money in the process:
Yankees sent first baseman Garrett Cooper and lefty pitcher Caleb Smith to the Miami Marlins for Class A right-hander Michael King and international bonus pool money. . . . Earlier Monday, the Yankees traded right-hander Ronald Herrera, who pitched in two big-league games in 2017, to the Rangers for Class A left-hander Reiver Sanmartin. Last week, the Yankees sent Nick Rumbelow to Seattle for two minor-league pitching prospects.

The Yankees filled those roster vacancies by adding top prospect Gleyber Torres and fellow infielder Thairo Estrada to the 40-man roster, along with outfielder Billy McKinney and right-handers Albert Abreu, Domingo Acevedo and Jonathan Loaisiga.

The deadline for reaching a posting agreement was pushed back to Tuesday.

Those are randomly generated names for deep minor league players in OOTP, right?

Later reports indicate that the Yankees picked up $250K in Ohtani money in that deal mentioned in #1, bringing their total to $3.5M, just pocket-change behind the Rangers $3.535M MLB high.

I'm kind of surprised that the Twins didn't protect Nick Burdi. Yeah, he's hurt, but he's got a killer arm, and Daniel Winkler being injured didn't stop the Braves from picking him in the 2015 draft.

Pick Burdi, stash him on the 60-day DL until he's ready for a rehab assignment in the minors, and then let him serve out his R5 time in 2019 (or if he doesn't make it back all the way, cut him loose).

Isn't that like giving seventeen cents to someone who needs $1000?

Twins also didn't protect former top pick Kohl Stewart. Probably not what they were hoping for when they drafted him but lower pick Gonsalves makes up for the Stewart bust.
