Tebow to be promoted soon

Tim Tebow’s recent surge at Single-A Columbia — he has a .849 OPS over his last 16 games — hasn’t gone unnoticed by team officials.

According to a club source, there has been discussion about moving the former Heisman Trophy winner to a higher level…

It’s about time.

Too bad he doesn't have a strong arm. Mets need pitching.

That's a 0 HR, 25% K, .462 BABIP .849 over his last 16 games which has brought him to 250/330/370 on the season.

How ticked does this guy get to be when they promote Tebow?

Today's NY Post back-page headline: "DARK BLIGHT."

At this point I say the hell with it, let the Mets call him up and put the Lefty Gomez Theory to the ultimate test.

#1 I was just thinking the same thing the last few days.

Let's be honest, promoting Tebow can't make the Mets look any more incompetent or mismanaged than they already look.
   7. TomH Posted: May 13, 2017 at 11:52 AM (#5454730)
but, but, Tebow is ALWAYS being promoted! That's the problem!
   8. LA Podcasting Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 13, 2017 at 12:37 PM (#5454738)
It's not a big problem.
   9. Man o' Schwar Posted: May 13, 2017 at 01:30 PM (#5454753)
Given how old he is, I suspect they're thinking it's now or never to see what he can do. There's not much point in keeping a guy soon to be in his 30s as single A.

Promote him on a hot streak, see how he stacks up against the next level.

If the Mets fall out of contention this year, I wouldn't at all be surprised to see him in NY this September. If you're not going to win, might as well try to put some butts in the seats.

Compared to rest of what the LOLMets are mishandling and mismanaging,Tebow is just a drop in the bucket.

Right now the Mets are so hapless that they could promote Tebow directly to the Show and it would only rank as something like their fifth worth decision of the last month.
   11. Dog on the sidewalk Posted: May 13, 2017 at 01:45 PM (#5454759)
It was a really stupid decision by the Mets to get all their good players injured. They'd probably reconsider it if they could.

That does give Tebow the third highest OPS on the team among those with more than 10 ABs. The actual headline only says that the Mets are considering promoting Tebow, and the article indicates that wouldn't happen before the All-Star break. So, the article essentially says that Tebow might get promoted if he puts up an ~ .850 OPS for another 6-8 weeks. Not such a big deal, except for ending the rather noticeable Tebow Effect on attendance:
The Fireflies led the SAL with an average of 5,103 fans per game, which was the second-highest in Class A. That’s 1,400 fans per game more than the team averaged over the same stretch last year when the Fireflies were opening a new park after relocating from Savannah, Ga.
. . .
When Columbia hit the road in the first month of the season, they played in front of an average of 4,607 fans. When those same teams hosted non-Tebow teams, they averaged 2,399 fans. Based on the April attendance data, the Tebow effect appears to be roughly 2,210 fans per night. Minor league teams estimate that the average fan will spend $20 per person if they come to the ballpark. That counts ticket sales, concessions and souvenirs. So Tebow is worth roughly an additional $44,200 per night.

His agent should have insisted on an attendance clause in his contract.

Hey, look at it this way: at least we hardcore fans were lucky enough to follow all the jock-sniffing from the get-go, so this is like old times.

1. Letting Syndergaard pitch without an MRI.
2. ?
3. ?
4. ?

So Tebow is worth roughly an additional $44,200 per night.

The Mets don't own the Charlotte A affiliate. But they do own St Lucie, their A+ affiliate.

Maybe they have 45,000 reasons a game to promote him?

I did hear bells ringing.

this one should probably be re-posted in September - either way.

And then get Peyton Manning and let Von Miller win you a championship. Classic.

I said this in part because I remembered the White Sox calling up Michael Jordan in September, but come to find looking it up in BBRef they did not. Though I wonder if the strike hadn't happened if they would have.

They weren't exactly out of contention, though.

I blame my faulty memory. Still, if I were running the Mets and they got to September 1st 10 game out of a playoff spot, I'd certainly consider it. There's money to be made in authentic Tebow jerseys alone.

I don't see it, Man o', and if it's way off, I have no intention of it being revived.

but if it happens, I grant you full permission for a "just sayin'"
:)
   25. Man o' Schwar Posted: May 14, 2017 at 12:31 AM (#5455022)
Fair enough. Maybe it's the carny in me. Bill Veeck would have promoted him. He'd probably already be a Met. :)
   26. Cargo Cultist Posted: May 14, 2017 at 01:18 AM (#5455026)
Veeck would have already had him batting clean-up and pitching part-time.

That man never missed a trick.
