Tempers flare as Rangers-Angels game ends

ANAHEIM—Andrelton Simmons took a spike to the shin on a slide from Rougned Odor, one that forced him to wrap his leg with bandages after the Angels’ 6-0 win over the Rangers, and one that left a “nasty gash,” according to Angels manager Mike Scioscia. The dugouts cleared. The bullpens cleared.

The fracas in question occurred immediately after Friday night’s game was over, the play itself a 4-6-3 double play that ended a threat in the ninth inning and secured the Angels’ win.

As Simmons turned two with a play at second base, Odor appeared to veer out of the baseline in an attempt to break up the double play by swiping at Simmons’ leg on his slide.

The days of the takeout slide are over. The days of Rougned Odor being a total disgrace are still going strong.

The headline makes it seem like people are upset that the game ended.

Completely illegal slide, and Odor should be suspended.

Meanwhile, coincidentally, Eric Byrnes is going nuts on MLB Network about the Rizzo slide. "I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE NEW RULE!! WE PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!! THIS IS SPORTS!! THIS IS BASEBALL!!" in a register about two octaves above his normal voice, which is saying something. It's becoming obvious that more serious measures are going to be necessary to get the culture of the game to acknowledge that the rules have changed.

Dirty player playing for a dirty coach. Suspend both of them for 80 games.

By law it was a good slide. Get over it.

He extended his leg to hit Simmons. That doesn't seem kosher.

Not for much longer. Brace for it.

Saw a better replay. The spike to the shin was objectionable. Simmons was pretty funny after the game, too.

Mud on my face
Big disgrace
Somebody better put me back in my place...

Dirty slide but legal if Rizzo's was. He could reach the base and part of his body went at the base.

A better rule is needed because that slide should not be legal.

#4: I change the channel when I see Eric Byrnes is on. He's just awful.

Agreed that they should simplify and clarify the rule. But it was not legal, the way the rule is written now. Odor deviated from his path, and changed direction, in order to lunge out and get his foot on Simmons.

Part of the problem though, is that the only real penalty for such a slide, is a completed double play. Which was completed here in any case. So even if the umpires ruled correctly (I am not sure what they ruled), it would not actually change anything. If they want this to change, they need to start ejecting and suspending players.

watched the play, and no, there is no way that play is legal by the current rules, and it's clearly dirty...

Which it wasn't.

Last year, Odor hit 30 homers and somehow managed just a 65 OPS+.

Makes me wonder, what's the lowest OPS+ in a 30 home run season? I'm not a B-R whiz who can figure that kind of thing out.

Odor was the worst, by far. Second worse was Tony Batista with 81.

I've spent too much time on Facebook. I just tried to like your answer.
   19. bunyon Posted: June 02, 2018 at 09:24 PM (#5684675)
I don't think there was any ruling on the play because the double play was completed and the game was over. There was literally nothing to do with the play unless they want to suspend Odor, which I doubt will happen.

And, no, Rizzo's slide wasn't legal. But a fair number of people, including some on this site, have tried to argue that it was. IF it was, then so was this slide. (Neither were, of course).

If you don't have pi, it's not really possible to get that answer, if you do have pi, it's very easy to get that answer.
Here is the list of players with 30 homeruns and less than 100 ops+ sorted by highest ops+, but does include war to show their ultimate value.

Neither were, of course

Of course, the umps on the field and in the bootb ruled Rizzo violated no rules.

You guys wouldn't even make good traffic cops.

Eric Byrnes is the closest real-life approximation of Cornholio from Beavis & Butthead.

Inevitably there was more controversy last night in Anaheim, and inevitably Odor scored the eventual winning run – never a dull moment with that guy.

But Odor isn't developing as a hitter – if anything he's taking steps backwards; he has only one home run in 121 PAs this year and is as close to worthless as you can get right now. He's trying to compensate with dirty-uniform play (in both senses) but it's not working. I said a couple of years ago, when Odor put up a 105 OPS+ despite hardly ever appearing on base, that we ought to enjoy it while it lasted, but it didn't last much longer. (So far; the guy's still only 24.)

He's never had any strikezone judgement: his out-of-zone swing % is 38% for his career. Now he has no power either; .100 ISO.

He's not even getting unlucky in his 54 wRC+. he's got a .299 BABIP.
