Tennessean: Nashville Sounds’ new ballpark on track for final approval

The Metro Council is poised to give the go-ahead to construction of a new ballpark for the Nashville Sounds tonight, setting the stage for the minor league baseball team to start playing in a new home in 16 months.

Pending approval by the council and a final vote by the Metro Sports Authority on Wednesday, the city will go to market and sell $65 million worth of municipal revenue bonds later this week, Metro Finance Director Rich Riebeling said Monday. A construction manager could be on board by Jan. 1.

This has been a *lonnngggg* time in the making.

Greer Stadium is my least favorite minor league venue; it should have been replaced long ago. The proposed location, on the old Sulphur Dell site, offers an attractive alternative, particularly if the Sounds follow through on their commitment to develop the surrounding area (which they’re not obligated to do but which makes a lot of sense from a financial standpoint). This is about as close to a win-win situation as you’re going to get in this day and age.

Particularly for AAA, Greer Stadium is an awful experience, and particularly for a city that fancies itself "big league" as Nashville does. When I lived in Memphis, the QOL there was measurably better than our fierce rival NashVegas in one significant way during baseball season... though given the shenanigans surrounding AutoZone Park right now, Memphis is prepared to squander that advantage as they have squandered so many in their history.

Digression aside, good for central Tennessee's baseball fans. Stadium construction is a boondoggle like any public works project, but there's no way to go but up from Greer. Provided they save that sweet guitar scoreboard, of course -- if not, let the greatest eBay auction of all time begin!

Put it next to the "state of Texas" scoreboard from old Arlington Stadium.

What are the shenanigans surrounding Autozone Park?

Maybe this is just how it is in every city, but Memphis is the graveyard of stadium abortions. MidSouth Coliseum, the Pyramid, and the Liberty Bowl are testament to the resistance to ever make a decision about anything ballpark-related, not when decaying in place remains an option. Hell, McCarver stood vacant and condemned five years after AutoZone opened. I just don't trust city government to decide wisely on any topic and stadium stewardship in particular. Too damn bad, because AutoZone is a gem.

Back in 2007 when we lived an hour outside Nashville my wife surprised me for our anniversary by taking me to a game at Greer Stadium. She knew nothing about it other than that baseball was played there. We both marveled at two things: How incredibly green the field was (Central/western Tennessee was going through the most horrendous drought in hundreds of years in the summer of 2007 and *everything* was brown) and what a dump the park was.

The only other minor league park my wife had ever attended a game in was in Altoona, which has a small but very nice and modern park. She kept saying "I can't believe a professional team plays here."

Oh, thanks. I had seen a couple headlines at BA or something about the Cardinals buying the team but didn't pursue the details any further. I guess the rent terms will be a large factor in how badly the city gets hosed.
