Texas Rangers’ Daniels shakes up coaches

A day after the Texas Rangers finished the season with the worst ERA, fielding percentage and the most catching errors in the majors, they made changes in all three areas.

“Today is a rough day and tomorrow will be, too,” Washington said. “But we’ve got to be professionals and go on.”

If Hawkins is moved either to the bullpen or goes back to Triple-A Oklahoma, the Rangers will have their eighth different pitching coach since 2000.

Maybe not trading guys like Chris Young, John Danks, Edinson Volquez, and Armando Galarraga would have more impact than constantly shuffling pitching coaches.

Clearly there's something to this... the Rangers for whatever reason just can't identify pitching talent they control. Of course, Galarraga was never anything more than average in the minors, statistically or scouting-wise.

I think most fans are accepting of trades that just don't work out, but that's not really the problem here. Not only has Daniels made several truly terrible trades, but they were identified as such the very day he made them. I think early in his GM career, Daniels was obsessed with buying pitching lottery tickets, trying to score that one, dominant #1 starter who could carry the team in his starts.

The only trade immediately identifiable as terrible that comes to mind is the Chris Young trade. Everybody hated that.

Danks for McCarthy was another difficult one, in that it didn't really make a whole lot of sense, but there was nothing to point to it being a bad trade from a fan perspective (ie, not knowing about the future health problems). McCarthy hasn't been that much worse than Danks when he's been healthy.

The Chris Young/Adrian Gonzalez deal was clearly identified as bad from day one. There was a split in opinion over Danks/McCarthy and that one may still turn out Ok. Volquez for Hamilton was mostly cheered and looks like it has turned out well. Galarraga was just a freakish result.

But overall, yeah. There's just not any evidence that the organization knows what its doing in assessing young pitching.
