How many times are HR Derby contestants allowed to swing and miss? And, what is the over/under on the number of batting practice speed fastballs that Joey Gallo swings through? And, which gambling establishment is sponsoring?

Isn't it timed now?

I can see the downsides to participating in the HR Derby (basically, it can s*crew up a player's timing).

But if there's going to be a HR Derby, I have to admit that I like the idea that the winner gets a cool $1MM.

You know that's not really a thing, right?

Oh, it absolutely is a thing - after Schwarber did the HR derby last year, it ###### up the timing for every Cubs hitter.

Doesn't matter if it's a 'thing' or not; when a player goes into a slump, people latch onto every possible reason for it. (It's like why you can't let your favourite players participate in the World Baseball Classic...because if you do, they'll break every bone in their bodies; contract lumbago, scurvy, AIDS and the heartbreak of psoriasis; kill the love and affection that anyone has ever had for you; and tear a hole in the space-time continuum, hurdling us into the sun.)

Color me weird but I'd rather see the prize being a $1 M donation to the player's favorite charity. Good PR and I suspect it would be a bigger incentive for genuine stars to be involved.

This should get all the young pre-arb sluggers wanting to do the HR derby. A good way to build up young stars.

Barring hurting himself, I've never really understood how the derby was supposed to screw up a player's swing or timing. It's basically batting practice with commercials. These guys take batting practice several times a day, I imagine.

Also, it never seemed to hurt Henry Aaron, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Duke Snider, Al Kaline, or any of the various other stars they used to get on the old black-and-white TV show.

well, since that show was filmed in December 1959, color me not surprised at that.

you're not weird. it has the appearance of reducing everything to completely mercenary. It's not a look i would be going for.

Never mind, MLB is probably collecting the vig on all the over/under bets...

Of course, any one of those stars can still compete and promise to donate the money to charity.
