Texas Rangers ownership race takes bizarre twist, keeping Ryan in mix

Nolan Ryan. Gone?

Yes. He was.

Gone as both the president of the Texas Rangers, and even more disturbing, gone as the club’s face of credibility at a time when the team suffers greatly in management image.

Nolan was outta here, several sources have confirmed, if Tom Hicks’ bold attempt to retain ownership control had been successful.

Ryan was unavailable for comment on Thursday night, and reportedly out of town.

But based on confirmation from those close to the situation, Nolan would have resigned his position if Hicks’ new ownership partnership with Dennis Gilbert, a Californian, eventually had been approved by Major League Baseball.

I don't know about "face of credibility" and "PR suicide" – organizations can recover almost immediately when somebody "indispensable" leaves – but it does seem that the 2009 Rangers improved on the field and notably improved their ability to prevent runs. Nolan Ryan may have had next to zero to do with that, but just on superstition alone I'd like to see him run things for another couple of years to see if he can improve on his '09 results.

I don't always agree with everything he says, and I have no idea how much he has to do with the product on the field, but at this point I'd say that having Ryan around is an unalloyed good for the Rangers. He's popular, he's local, and he doesn't haver a suppurating sore where his brain ought to be -- all good.
