HOW WILL THE ANGELS YANKEES AND ORIOLES LOSE TODAY?!

Will they rally from an 8-0 deficit and then blow it in the top of the 9th, or will their $17,200,000 closer blow a lead in the bottom half? Stay tuned!

Michael Kay talked about all that money riding the bench with Ellsbury, but immediately countered with Frazier's gotta play. And Sandoval.

Sorry you spent $100 mil on a replacement player, but Hank's got it covered.

Love that NESN announcer's comment about how Matt Holliday's grandfather got signed by the Yankees, and although he never made it to the Majors he caught Whitey Ford when they served together in WWII.

Whitey Ford was 16 on V-J Day.

Max Scherzer is pitching to the inning. He allows a hit or a walk, then strikes out the next 3 hitters on 3 pitches each. He has done that in the first two innings in Cinci tonight.

Cody Bellinger moves back into a tie with Votto for the NL HR lead. I hope the struggles for two weeks before the all star break were just a slump and he's back to being a beast. And as I type that, Grandal hits a 3 run homer to make it a 5 run inning.

The Boston game now under protest ? If so, by whom ? Both teams ?

Boston is apparently protesting the failure to call Holliday out for interference when he came back to first after being forced out at 2nd (presumably he thought Moreland had stepped on 1st before throwing to 2nd). My guess is that they didn't call interference because Moreland didn't make any real effort to catch the ball, he was more getting out of the way. I vaguely recall a no-call on a batter interfering with a catcher throwing to 2nd because the catcher never threw, just started complaining to the umpire. Strange play, perhaps the umps will explain after the game, but interference is a "judgment call", so I don't think the protest would be upheld.
   47. cardsfanboy Posted: July 15, 2017 at 08:26 PM (#5494127)
Lance Lynn, batting left handed hits a single to the gap, that is misplayed by the centerfielder to score the runner from first base...

Lance took up batting left handed this season.... supposedly changed his hand because of the data based upon exit velocity and launch angle that they were gathering.... or something like that.

That's the obvious explanation, but the NESN announcers still haven't figured it out.

Mickey Mantle was in Holliday's position in the 9th inning of the 7th game of the 1960 World Series, and he did the same thing as Holliday, and avoided the tag on what would've been a Series ending double play. Instead, there were still only two outs, and while Mantle dived back to first, Gil McDougald scored the tying run.

Of course in this case, unlike in 1960, Moreland didn't step on the base, but it wasn't unreasonable for Holliday to have assumed that, and if it was interference, it didn't have to be intentional.

For those that care about minor transactions.... Cardinals had 4 outfielders on the major league roster, Piscotty went on the DL today, and Magneuris Sierra was activated to take his place, problem is that he's not currently at the game... should be there some time during the game, but right now not.... Piscotty was injured last night, and it took them a while to make the decision to put him on the dl....I guess. (Cardinals really need to have an injury to someone on the infield so that tough roster decisions don't have to be made every game----today recently activated Wong is given a game off so that Voit could play... )

It just doesn't occur to those NESN dim bulbs that Holliday wasn't looking at Moreland. Their theory is that he thought Moreland caught the ball in the air, but not that he thought he tagged first to retire Ellsbury and then threw to second to get the DP on a tag play. It's as if they've never seen such a play before.

Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal
Explanation from MLB on Holliday play: To call interference, umpires would have needed to judge that Holliday's actions were intentional. Holliday, it was determined, slid back into first base because he (mistakenly) thought that was what the play called for.

He clearly thought the ball was over the fence, a sure homerun.

Announcers are talking about what the Cardinals might do at the trade deadline....but the reality is that there isn't really anything they can do that seems to be an improvement over the team this year or the future. (when you look at what's available and the costs)

Offensively the Cardinals have no 'true' weakness.. not from their viewpoint at least. They aren't going to consider anything at catcher, so Yadier is safe, first base is Matt Carpenter(117 ops+) and temporarily Luke Voit(161 ops+) until he stops hitting. Second base is Matt Carpenter and Wong (until Voit stops hitting) shortstop is the true weakness, you have a rookie in Dejong(137 ops+) and an all star rookie last season, that has been sent to the minors temporarily with Diaz...at third you have Gyorko(you know the guy that has a 14 rField and a 131 ops+ this season) In the outfield you have Pham(team leading 12 stolen bases, 11 rField and a 135 ops+) Fowler---big ass contract, and Piscotty(91 ops+ this season, career 112 ops+, and plus defender, and costs nothing) along with Grichuk a guy who also costs nothing and hits a ton of homeruns....

In theory there is an opportunity for a replacement in the outfield, but nothing really worth acquiring unless you get something special. And second base could use an improvement, but Wong is signed to a fairly decent sized contract that right now is the worst time ever to trade him, in theory the goal would be to trade Wong when Diaz comes back, move Diaz to second base and keep Gyorko, but that is more a off season type of move.

Same with the pitching, Wainwright isn't going anywhere this season, Leake is locked, Lynn is a free agent, but trading him makes no sense if you want to compete, and of course Martinez is untouchable. Wacha could garner some interest, but not sure that any trade made with him would change the make up of the team in any way either this season or long term.

When you load the bases for Tony Two Bags, ya beddah be prepared for him to touch 4 bags. Grand salami makes it 10-0 Nationals at the Great American Bandbox.
