LET'S GO METS!

Happy Thorsday, Charlie!

Will the Cubs get shut out or score 10 runs today? Nothing in between.

HOW WILL THE AVENGERS WIN TODAY?!

And back atcha, Mr. Trout.

Charlie, I know it's April BUT the Metsies could really use a W and a nice deep outing from Noah today. I get the feeling that the good ship is creaking a little bit.

Uh.... you know the plot of this one right? They ain't winning anything until part 2.

That ship is always going to show lots of cracks whenever deGrom or Syndergaard isn't starting.

At least until Vargas gets to pitch and/or one of Harvey-Wheeler-Matz can solve the problem of rectal-cranial inversion.
   10. Panik on the streets of London (Trout! Trout!) Posted: April 26, 2018 at 12:36 PM (#5661093)
The last two deGrom starts have been the creakiest and he pitched two gems.
   11. Dog on the sidewalk Posted: April 26, 2018 at 12:38 PM (#5661096)
I am not at all sold on Vargas actually being good, though he should be an upgrade.

They also desperately need a real catcher. Sorry for the shameless self-promotion...but I'm not sorry! HAHA!
   13. Perry Posted: April 26, 2018 at 12:42 PM (#5661101)
I speculated maybe a batting cage mishap had knocked Tommy Pham out of last night's game, looks like I was right.

They need a catcher, but I don't think they should trade Nimmo; who is probably what anyone selling a good catcher would want. Good article Charlie!

Trading for people is hard when you don't have a great farm system. Tucker Barnhart might be a good solution but what would the Reds want? The Marlins have repeatedly asked for way too much for Realmuto.

The Marlins have repeatedly asked for way too much for Realmuto.

Jeter: "Sandy, I hear you're in a bind with your catching situation. I might be able to help you out."

Alderson: "Really? You want to talk Realmuto? I'm all ears!"

Jeter: "I always liked you, Sandy."

Alderson: "And I have always re2pected you, Derek. Now, what would you want for Realmuto?"

Jeter: "Well, we'd have to start with Rosar-"

Alderson: [click]

Jeter: "-io Dawson. Wasn't she great in the remake of RENT?"

Alderson: "Why yes. Yes she was."

Jeter: "Glad we agree. Why don't you just send us the corpse of Matt Harvey for Realmuto?"

Alderson: "..."
   20. The usual palaver and twaddle (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: April 26, 2018 at 01:11 PM (#5661125)
Alderson: "I'll throw in Tebow, as well."

Noah looking good. Let's get some more runs.
   22. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: April 26, 2018 at 01:51 PM (#5661161)
The two youngest players in baseball are Ocuna and Albies, who both homered today for the Braves. That's depressing as Met fan.
   23. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 26, 2018 at 02:03 PM (#5661169)
Andrew Miller to the DL. That's now 2 dominant relievers who have hurt themselves throwing a pitch against the Cubs this year (Knebel; both in their own home park). Were I managing any future games against the Cubs, I'd just avoid playing my guys just to be safe.
   24. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: April 26, 2018 at 02:11 PM (#5661179)
Tomas Nido has two hits so far this season in 18 AB. I am shocked that he has that many. In the few AB I have seen from him, he has not looked close to getting a hit.

Kyle Gibson is not the pitcher I thought would dominate the Yankees lineup, but here we are.

Nimmo might win the Ron Hunt Award. Seems like he gets plunked a lot.

Too soon.

Carlos Martinez hits his 6th batter of the season, on pace for 30+
   31. salvomania Posted: April 26, 2018 at 02:55 PM (#5661230)
Really don't like the early hook of Martinez (6 innings, 86 pitches) down 1-0 to the Mets; I'd rather get 7 out of him and be prepared to go into the bottom of the 7th with (worst-case scenario) the 2-3-4 hitters due up, down 1-0.

I have more faith in Martinez than in whichever reliever goes out to pitch the 7th...
   32. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: April 26, 2018 at 03:00 PM (#5661232)
Nimmo really has been excellent this year in part time work.
   33. salvomania Posted: April 26, 2018 at 03:03 PM (#5661233)
I have more faith in Martinez than in whichever reliever goes out to pitch the 7th...

And four batters later the lead is 2-0 and the Mets are threatening more...
   34. salvomania Posted: April 26, 2018 at 03:08 PM (#5661234)
Carlos Martinez has allowed 2 runs in 33 April innings.
   35. salvomania Posted: April 26, 2018 at 03:09 PM (#5661235)
Granted, 13 of those innings were against the Reds; but the other 20 were against the teams with the second- and third-best records in the NL.
   36. salvomania Posted: April 26, 2018 at 03:12 PM (#5661241)
OK, an Ozuna single gets the run back as he drives in Pham, but instead of a tie game the Birds are still one in the hole...
   37. salvomania Posted: April 26, 2018 at 03:13 PM (#5661242)
I guess if DeJong is going to homer it wouldn't have mattered, but he might not hit a home run here... Let's see:

EDIT: OK, double, now the tying and go-ahead runs are in scoring position for the Wonger.

I imagine Callaway goes to the pen here....

Strike 3!
   49. salvomania Posted: April 26, 2018 at 03:36 PM (#5661272)
And I lose my money.

I'm kind of surprised Syndergaard is still in there, around 100 pitches and about to go through the lineup for the 4th time, an inning after giving up three hits...

But I'm not watching the game so have no idea how well he's still throwing or how hard-hit the balls have been...
   50. The usual palaver and twaddle (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: April 26, 2018 at 03:37 PM (#5661274)
At best, I see a tie game here. 1st & 3rd 1 out for Pham.
   51. The usual palaver and twaddle (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: April 26, 2018 at 03:39 PM (#5661275)

First hit was a high fly that Cespedes unnecessarily slid for and dropped, followed by a bloop over second. The other ball was well hit but went off Frazier's glove.

I like the idea of pushing guys to regularly pitch 100-115 pitches and I wouldn't use this as evidence that Noah can't. Rosario muffed a ball that should have been an out.
   57. Panik on the streets of London (Trout! Trout!) Posted: April 26, 2018 at 03:49 PM (#5661284)
So annoying that Rosario didn't make that play.

   60. Panik on the streets of London (Trout! Trout!) Posted: April 26, 2018 at 03:52 PM (#5661291)
yeah, because if they take the lead, you bring in familia. if they don't you leave in gsellman for another inning.

Why do the Twins even bother to come to YS?

I think we can put the "will the Yankees actually be bad" thing to bed.

And Podcasting Hombre, you're right, I can't follow the shtick sometimes - I thought it was what you expected to happen.

I have no problems with Bowman, he is what he is, ground ball creating machine and generally the 6th or 7th inning guy or the guy coming in with a man on base and one out in a close game. It's the "big" name relievers who I have been having issues with. (Gregerson, Leone and Holland)
   78. cardsfanboy Posted: April 26, 2018 at 04:40 PM (#5661336)

Nice work by the Cardinals with two outs in the bottom of the 10th.

Pham with four hits, up to .373, a day after having to leave the game due to self-administered head lacerations.

Cardinal announcers keep saying this, every broadcast, but it's not true. "Jose Martinez never played first base until he got to the Cardinals." Yes he did, not much but he did have about 30 games played at first in his minor league career before he joined the Cardinals organization.

Playername --- AB AVG-OBP-SLG runs scored
Brett Gardner--- 87 .230 .358 .299 .. 23

finding guys whose AB AVG-OBP-SLG ##s are similar to Gardner's (which is hard, given his OBP>SLG), I get

Joey Votto ------90 .260 .358 .367 ... 6
Starlin Castro---96 .305 .355 .344 .. 12
Nicky Delmonico 61 .246 .352 .311 ... 4

Brett Gardner is "on pace" to score 162 runs. Ha ha ha.
