The Baseball Analysts: Calcaterra: Great Moments in Frivolity, Part I

Taking a break from being a hopped-up spokesman for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame…Craig Calcaterra does some fine Designated Hitting.

Billy Crystal signed with the Yankees and faced Pirates’ pitcher Paul Maholm in his only at bat. He struck out, but looked pretty good doing it, especially for a sixty year-old man. Since it was a one-day contract, the Yankees released him that afternoon. Brian Cashman regrets the decision, however, after watching Robinson Cano post a .151/.211/.236 line in April.

A book reveals that Mickey Mantle had an affair with Doris Day during the filming of “That Touch of Mink” back in 1962. Day denied the reports at the time, but Mantle’s wife fled to Paris to be with pop singer Frankie Avalon and then immediately filed divorce papers. The whole thing was splashed all over the New York tabloids.

Former Blue Jays’ third baseman Ed Sprague admits that, over the course of his Major League Career, he took amphetamines and Androstenedione and once hit a home run with a corked bat. As a result, Game 2 of the 1992 World Series is retroactively awarded to the Atlanta Braves. The teams are currently scheduled to meet at the end of the 2008 season to play a deciding Game 7. Jack Morris is set to start for the Jays, assuming someone can wake him up from his afternoon nap.

I wish I could remember the exact chain of events leading to a Sal Fasano stolen base in a Blue Jays game televised this spring on ESPN. He'd taken exception to ???, then swiped second with 2 outs in the 9th to express his displeasure and then may have been picked off to end the game? Totally bizarre. And totally lame of me to forget.

It was during the Red Sox- BJ's game, the game delayed by a Sox boycott prior to leaving for Japan. Perhaps his bad mood was precipitated by missing out on a tee time because of the delayed start. Or maybe it was because he got on via the HBP (Papelbon). Anyway, the Jays won.

I hope the headline of the breaking story was "That Touch of Mick".

I enjoyed Jamie Moyer's infield single versus the Pirates last year. Basically, Jose Bautista or Jose Castillo or one of those guys thought it was going to roll foul, but it didn't.

Against the Dbacks defense, that was a stand-up double!

Sorry, I save that level of disrespect for Larianne Day.

And this was before Durocher gilded the Lily Munster.

And this was before Durocher gilded the Lily Munster.

Gosh, I remember the episode where Herman tried out for the Dodgers, I guess there was some action back in the clubhouse during the filming. YDeC was a hottie in her day although Lily takes second place to Morticia. I also remember Jethro Bodine as well as Mr. Ed trying out for the Dodgers.

Here's a couple of clips, ya gotta dig the Mr. Ed slide as well as him taking Sandy Koufax pretty deep.

From tv.com -- I can not vouch for this:
(The family tells Durocher that Elly can throw just as well as Jethro can)
Jethro: She’s got plenty of stuff.
Durocher: Yeah. We could never hide it under a Dodger uniform.

Who would have been the best ball player, Herman, Mr. Ed, Jethro or Elly Mae? Discuss.

I wonder if Durocher put his hand on Elly Mae's ######.

By all that is holy, Doris, "Please Don't Eat the Casey."

Or "With 7 You Get the Hayroll" (which would be even better if Mick had kept his original number 6)
