The Baseball Analysts: Lederer: Looking Through the Classifieds

Wiping the darkened linseediness off his fingers…Lederer breaks down all the GM moves.

OK, here is how I see this game of musical chairs playing out. Gillick or Bowden will wind up in L.A. If pressed to name one or the other, I would say Bowden. Gillick (60%) or Hunsicker (40%) will end up in Philly. Hunsicker or Andrew Friedman will get the nod in Tampa Bay. Either Kevin Towers will land in Boston to be reunited with Larry Lucchino, his old boss in San Diego (see photo below of pending press conference), or look for Hunsicker—if he hasn’t been gobbled up elsewhere—to be the one to worry about what to do with Manny. Sandy Alderson will appreciate Epstein’s talents and offer him the Padres job should Towers bolt for greener pastures.

*jaw drops open*

You mean to tell me that people are fighting over Jim Bowden?

!?!?!

Every time I think I've seen all the possible stupidities the world has to offer, the world comes back and takes it to a new level.

Despite the sudden availability of Theo Epstein, the Phillies are still planning to hire either Gerry Hunsicker or Pat Gillick as GM, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

An announcement on the hiring of either could come within the next two days. There's been speculation that an offer to Gillick has already been made. Nov. 1 - 3:47 am et

I thought Bowden was signed thru next year. Maybe the Dodgers can trade a prospect, say Joel Guzman, to WAS for the rights to Trader Jim?

In the end, I won't be surprised if Gillick goes to PHI, Hunsicker to TAM, Towers to BOS, and Orel-B-ulldog gets his clean teeth into LA's turd pile

Bowden's signed through April or so. MLB extended his contract while the ownership dance continues, but didn't want to lock the new ownership into him.

A rational thought that mighthave value.

[] Alderson begat Beane and Alderson's methods strongly shaped Beane's approach to being a G.M.

[] Beane nurtured DePodesta and helped D's post-Indians growth.

[] Alderson is closer to understanding the methods DePodesta works with than any other MLB team's equivalent exec, meaning on his side, the relationship is familial (in an organizational sense).

[] From D's career point of view, he would have someone above him in the chain who could cover for whatever skills he's missing (allegedly a challenge for him in the LA job).

[] If he has any ego at all, it would provide him the divisional platform and delicious prospect of kicking Lasorda's Slim-Fast-alicious gluteus up and down Route 101.

Re #4. I think DePodesta could be a candidate for the SD job if it opens up. Epstein would be a more likely choice though, at least in my opinion.

Re #5. If Gillick gets the Philly job, that means Bowden becomes the top candidate for LA.

D'oh!

Rich:
I hope you don't think I was asserting that I had insight into what would happen. I don't have a shred. I was thinking, though, about how baseball management has all these lineages and pseudo-family connections.

I think the Dodger job is easier because of the personnel on hand...the Padre job easier because of the owner and other management. Bowden doesn't seem like the right guy for a team that has the Dodgers' make-up. I hope you escape that turn.

Jeff - I think your logic is Grade A and that's why I agree that DePo could be a legitimate candidate for the SD job, if and when it opens up. I don't have any insight either but am speculating that the Padres are probably just one of a few teams that would give him another opportunity at this point.

Nitpick, but Route 101 doesn't go to San Diego. It ends in Los Angeles. Interstate 5 is the more appropriate metaphor.
