The Baseball Show with Rany and Joe - Episode 47

Rany Jazayerli and Joe Sheehan marvel over Mike Trout.  Sheehan says Trout “should be the unanimous MVP” at this point, and it’s detailed how Trout’s performance at his age puts him in incredible company, most notably Alex Rodriguez, Mel Ott, Al Kaline, Mickey Mantle, and Ty Cobb.  Rany and Joe agree that they’d take Mike Trout through age 20 over Ken Griffey Jr. through age 20.  Sheehan then says he’d rather have Bryce Harper.

interesting - of the playesr mentioned in the summary, a-rod, ott and kaline's 20/21 year old performance was pretty much the best of their career.

they may have had another year (or several) that were nearly comparable performance (either sligthly better or slightly worse) but they never improved.

in that contest, pjuols' 20/21 year old performance is even more 'wow!' - he's done better than it in a number of seasons. same with
teddy ballgame's career.

Sure, but that's because Pujols and Ted performed a lot worse at 20 than A-Rod and Kaline did¹, so they could improve ;)

If Trout can keep this going, it almost goes without saying that he'll never have a significantly better year. As Rany/Joe point out, if Trout did put up the season he's on pace for at the age of 20, and then improved at a "normal" rate, he'd peak with the value of Babe Ruth if Ruth were simultaneously an everyday hitter and a rotation starter...
