Not since the Lufkin DaVita bleach murder trial have I seen…ohh.
Bill, heres another late-to-the-party question: can you briefly recap the consensus of the defensive metrics concerning Jeter’s fielding? Thanks.
Is that brief enough?
On NY sports radio today a caller asked the guy on air if he thought Beltran was a Hall of Famer. The on air guy says “not yet. Maybe if he has another 3 or 4 good years.” I know you’re not ranking players these days but Beltran strikes me as one of the dozen or so best CF’s of all time already and an obvious HOFer. What do you think?
I’ve been asked by several people and I’ve been meaning to study it. Intuitively, I would be closer to your position than the Sports Radio guy, but I don’t know that he is an OBVIOUS Hall of Famer. I think he is in the gray area, at least. He has 7 seasons of a 100 runs scored, 9 seasons of 100 RBI, a couple of seasons of 40 stolen bases, one season of 40 homers, outstanding record in post-season play, 300 career homers and 300 steals. He’s an “even balance of skills” guy, a player who is good at everything as opposed to exceptionaly good at one or two things, and those kind of guys historically sometimes are slow to be recognized.
At his age, obviously it is really improbable that he is going to have 3 or 4 more good years. Another thing I notice about him is that he throws better now than he did 15 years ago. I saw him play a lot when he first came up; I remember that he used to do “somersault throws” to home. Now he sets up and throws, but his arm appears to be stronger than ever.
