The book on A-Rod is in the eye of the beholder

If you’re like me in these difficult economic times, before you make a serious investment in a book — both money and time — you read reviews of the book.
...
“I can summarize this book in three words: Told you so.” — Jose Canseco, bestselling author of Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant ’Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big

I can summarize Jose Canseco in one word: asshat.

Asshat or not, Canseco was telling the truth. Yet again. He's the most believable person in this mess, and I'll believe whatever he says until proven otherwise.

I wonder who this generation's Bouton/Canseco will be?

That's tremendously foolish.

For starters, we don't know that Canseco was telling the truth. Canseco never said that A-Rod used steroids when he came to Texas and stopped in 2003, and we don't know if A-Rod used before then or after then, either way.

If I said Pujols had used steroids in his rookie season, and then a month from now it came out that he used steroids last season, would that make me a reliable source for who is using steroids?

Canseco claims that Manny Ramirez is on steroids. Are you going to believe that?
   5. Best Regards, President of Comfort, Esq. Posted: May 06, 2009 at 05:58 PM (#3167337)
As he said, you now have to prove that Manny Ramirez didn't do steroids. He'll believe whatever Canseco says.
   6. winnipegwhip Posted: May 06, 2009 at 06:20 PM (#3167403)
Many people in Major League Baseball have taken steroids. Manny is a major league player. Therefore Manny has taken steroids. There you go. There is a book.

3-4-5

As a matter of fact, I DO believe Manny Ramirez is on steroids, but then, I think most star position players (and pitchers) who came of age during the steroid era used/use steroids.

I also happen to think it's just a bit funny that Manny's contract year as a 35 year old included those two months in L.A.

Edit: Do any of you honestly believe A-Rod's 01-03 cover story? The simple fact is that Jose Canseco has been right, time and again, on the big issues. He might have forgotten the details of a double, but he was right about Brett Boone's use. He may have conflated himself with Big Mac, but it seems that McGwire juiced too.

For better or worse, Jose Canseco HAS told the truth about other players and their steroid use, and I see no reason to doubt the validity of his opinion re. A-Rod

Are you really serious?
   9. Heinie Mantush (Krusty) Posted: May 06, 2009 at 07:43 PM (#3167606)
About Manny? 100%

About Canseco, there's a touch of hyperbole (ok, so maybe I won't believe anything/everything), but I'm more than willing to listen to anything/everything he has to say. Maybe I missed it, but where has he been wrong about somebody's use?
   10. Tripon Posted: May 06, 2009 at 07:51 PM (#3167621)
Canseco has speculated on the people using steroids, that he was right doesn't mean that Canseco was telling the truth. He didn't have hard evidence that A-Rod was using, he just said that A-Rod was a likely user.

Same thing with Manny, he claimed Manny was using steroids, despite never playing with Manny on the same team, never using the same trainer, never working out without, and only meeting Manny a couple of times, and never on a one on one basis.

But hey, believe what you want.

Manny may turn out to have used steroids in the past, but it isn't because Canseco knows it to be so.

You don't even want to know what goes on during the charter Delta flights teams take.

Tripon protests too much. I suspect he's on steroids.

What are the odds that Canseco is one of Roberts' anonymous sources?

I'LL RIP YOUR HEAD OFF.

I mean, eh.

Isn't he also one of her non-anonymous sources?

Did anyone actually read the article?

Man, Tripon, God was definitely out to prove you wrong. Barely a full day later.

We should probably hold off judgement until more info is released. It could be amps and not steroids.

It could be amps and not steroids.

Second positive test for amps only yields a 25 game suspension (at least based on the rules in effect in 2006). Odds are that it's not amps.

Didn't Mike Cameron get 50 games last year for something that wasn't steroids?

edit: It was 25 games. thanks google!

What are the odds that Canseco is one of Roberts' anonymous sources?

Probably zero. Does anyone really think that Canseco would let anyone else profit from his information rather than himself? Canseco wouldn't even tell someone that apples are delicious if he thought he could cash that in, let alone bombshells like the A-Rod story.
   27. PerroX Posted: May 07, 2009 at 05:15 PM (#3169165)
Roberts apprenticed under Judith Miller.

ARod apprenticed under Jose Canseco.

Manny apprenticed under Damballah.

The timing of Tripon's comment is amazing.

I got a text this morning from tsn that said "manny ramirez has been suspended 50 games for violating mlb's drug policy" and my first thought was "Wow, 50 games for pot is ridiculous."

This was a very confusing thread until I noticed what year most of the comments were from.
