The crash that killed Nick Adenhart

The suspect runs, and 47-year-old Nunez chases. Radioing his colleagues that he’s in pursuit on foot, and in the dark with cars whipping past him, Nunez runs with his right hand holding onto his gun, ready to draw, yelling at the suspect to stop. The chase lasts only about 30 yards when finally the man stops, puts his hands up and gets down on the ground. Two backup units arrive. It’s around 1:15 a.m., and Officer Nunez pulls out his handcuffs. Before placing them on the man, he asks if he’s Andrew Gallo. The man, just 22 years old, says yes.

Then, before anything else happens, Gallo adds something else:

“Are the other people in the car all right?”

No matter how much detail you add to the timeline (and there’s a bunch here), it’ll still never make sense.

Sad story - say what you want about Gallo and others that drink and drive - they aren't happy about the results of their misdeeds. His entire life will be spent reliving that night and the decisions that led up to the crash. Haunted is probably an understatement.

I still can't believe Adenhart is dead - I have spent three seasons watching him MILB numbers every five days - waiting for his arrival in LAAoA. It seems weird to not have his stats looking back at me every so often.

Would it not serve everyone's interest if Gallo just bit a cyanide capsule? It would at least render him remorseful in many eyes.

Some might say the world would be a better place if you took your own advice.

Are you remorseful for helping people send death threats to his parents? Did you write one of those yourself, or do you let others do all your dirty work for you?

As much as I hate both drunk drivers and hit-and-run artists, and would like to see them get everything which is legally coming to them, I would like to note that I strongly agree with the sentiments offered by Reed's Johnson.

You know, you sure do make it easy to despise you, Halofan.

What's pitiful is that Halo turned a thread linked to a very good article detailing the lives lost into a condemnation on his ######-up comment. Obviously this story is all about drawing attention to himself.

Ignore him and read the link and comment on that.

It is past time to ban this joker.

For now, I am putting him on ignore.

I recommend it to everyone.

I'd say kudos to Amy Nelson who has produced a couple of good articles on the accident and aftermath now. She doesn't get much attention, but she seems to be one of espn.com's better writers.

There's a real depth to the article, starting with Adenhart's father facing his son's death in the hospital and then jumping back in time to see events leading to that point. Just realizing you can be on top of the world, or just enjoying life one minute and gone the next. The fact that they were one block from the club they were traveling to just kills you.

Yeah, great job by the writer.

I don't get ignoring people generally, it doesn't punish the offender, and all it does it that people ignoring people ask later in threads what they said about a person. Halofan's comments are disgusting, and if he's banned for it, so be it. But putting him on Ignore isn't going to do anything.

And yet there were people who defended Halofan in the earlier thread.

I trust that will cease from here on out. As I said in an earlier thread: he's simply not a very good human being. I don't suppose we can ban him or anything. But neither should we quietly tolerate his presence in our midst.

I understand that people don't like Halofan cause he published that address. And apparently he had a previous rep of being somewhat dickish, though he's never made any impression on me. I doubt people would be reacting to #2 the way they are if anyone else had written it. From skimming through a couple previous Adenhart threads, it seemed to me most people didn't care too much about Gallo's legal rights, his (presumed) anal virginity, his life in general. Suddenly everyone finds it offensive to suggest he kill himself, but I have a feeling if Joe Schmo wrote something similar in that 800-post thread, it would have gotten some support and not nearly the condemnation.

Seriously, he did that? Wow. That's just beyond cowardly.

Agreed, OB; very well stated. But that's why context is so important. The level of condemnation directed towards Halofan for his comment above apparently has its roots in his prior actions with regards to this tragedy. Ironically, the same is true (in my opinion) for the level of condemnation that has been directed towards Gallo. That is to say, I think Gallo would be the recipient of a lot more understanding and forgiveness for what he did were it not for the context of his actions (i.e., the prior DUI convictions, the suspended license, etc.).

So, yes, if Joe Schmo wrote something similar to Halofan's comment the reaction would be different. Quite different. But there's a reason for that, and it's a valid reason. At least, in my opinion.

I've read about this in a couple threads now, and it's important to note several things here:

1) Halofan published a link to a Riverside Press-Telegram article containing a reference to the block the Gallos live on. I don't remember whether he or others in that thread had deduced their exact address based on other, easily-deducible online data, but I don't recall anyone publishing his exact address (and neither did the PT story, which contained links to court documents with Gallo's address redacted). So ultimately if you have a bone to pick with him on this matter, you really have a gripe with the writers and editors of the PT.

2) That entire article was subsequently removed from Halos Heaven. (I was among those who found this to be not a little disturbing and suggested that it was inappropriate.)

3) #16 is spot on. That said, I find it not a little disturbing that a lot of commenters at HH have recommended that Gallo shouldn't be entitled to representation. Some even have gone on to rather graphic and frankly illegal punishments. Recognizing that people tend to shoot off their mouths after a tragedy like this, it also bears repeating that there's something of a lynch mob mentality with Gallo, which does no one any good in a staring-into-the-abyss sort of way.
