The Effectiveness of “Infield In” Defense | The SIS Blog

So, there’s clearly a trade-off here for the defense. Bringing the infield in will increase the likelihood of a hit on a groundball or short line drive, as the infielders have less time to react. But playing the infield in will do a better job of preventing runs. Even regular groundouts can score the runner when the infield is back; meanwhile, a ball fielded in a drawn-in infield can stop the runner from trying to score, or he can be more easily thrown out at home.

In 2018, the teams that played the most balls in play with “infield in” were the Padres (98), Phillies (93), and White Sox (82). The teams that played the fewest were the Angels (32), Brewers (32), and Mariners (34).

Great to see some data on this strategy.

I tend to play "in" the least of anyone in my APBA league.

A solid start. It would be good to adjust for the out and maybe base situations though. Infield in with no outs and the runner will usually stay put; with one out, he's much more likely to break. Also holding the runner at 3rd with no out doesn't do a lot of good if he's drivin in by the next batter. So infield back with no outs is at an artificial disadvantage of letting a run score on the first batter while infield in still lets the run score just sometimes not until the second batter.

It would also be good to see how often infield in is used appropriately. Possibly hidden behind these numbers is that infield in may allow multiple runs more often. If the strategy has been used appropriately, those extra runs will almost never matter but I would guess that employing this strategy before it's very late in the game is usually a bad idea.

Well, it should be heavily used against bad hitters, so the multiple run thing should be mitigated. In DMB I usually bring the IF or corners in against the bottom of the lineup. Never against top hitters unless it's a do-or-die type situation.

was there any mention of GB error rates? Obviously they go up with runners on, but were there any numbers on how much?
