The FanGraphs NYC Live Discussion Gets Even Better

For those not going to the SABR Convention in Atlanta…like me!

On Saturday, August 7th, FanGraphs and River Avenue Blues are hosting their first ever Live Discussion.  The event will consist of three hours of conversation about baseball, analysis of the sport, and how the game is covered.

Hosting the event will be David Appelman and Dave Cameron of FanGraphs along with Joe Pawlikowski, Benjamin Kabek, and Mike Axisa of River Ave Blues.  Notable guests include former Deadspin editor and author Will Leitch, baseball consultant and analyst Mitchel Lichtman, Wall Street Journal contributor David Biderman, as well as other writers from FanGraphs and around the web.

...Additionally, we’re going to host a game-watching party for attendees to gather at a local watering hole and view that afternoon’s Boston-New York match-up together. Those who make it to the event will be invited to join us for several more hours of fun later in the afternoon.

Also…

Jon Sciambi
Matthew Cerrone
Sky Kalkman

6th best live discussion in the league.

Thinking about going to this...just to heckle Cameron with a poster that has some other "6th best" products... Seriously though seeing Will Leitch talk would be interesting.

I'm tempted to go, just to see Carson Cistulli. But I'd have to get up pretty early to get there from Hartford on time.

I have no idea who Jon Sciambi is, but I do know I've seen him frequently mentioned as "Jon 'Boog' Sciambi".

Jon Sciambi did play by play for the Braves last year, before moving on to ESPN this year. He's basically one of us - SABR-nerds - but he gets paid to call baseball games and ask Joe Simpson, politely, why he's such an idiot. He's also an excellent play by play guy, has a great baseball voice, and is on my personal short list for best baseball broadcasters of the 21st century.

This gets Newsblog perma-top-billing? No names and a couple a-holes shooting the breeze? Oh, but it happens in NYC and now Szymborski is eating at the ESPN trough, so no-names and a couple a-holes doing any ol' thing in NYC is big news!

Sciambi's ok though.

He basically is my shortlist. The other guys I like are almost all aging relics of the 20th century -- Stone, Niehaus, Miller, Scully . . . sigh.

Seems like a good bunch to talk baseball with and I'm not being snarky. The problem for me is that I'd feel like the weirdest kind of groupie if I showed up.

Well, I've never met a single one of the gentlemen mentioned, or even seen a photo of the majority. But I'll say with some degree of confidence, no, none of them are.

I'm glad I'll be at SABR40.

I felt a bit like this when Belth spoke at the old Coliseum books on 42nd street and he was still just a random authored blogger.

Lassus, you went to one of those? I showed up at one, but I don't think Belth spoke, it was Steve Goldman and Dan Schlossberg.

Maybe I should book a nearby Starbucks for a speaking engagement and see if anyone comes.

I went to a number of those..didn't Alex speak there during his Curt Flood tour?

Maybe, Repoz. I only went twice. NYC is a doable trip for me (tho not as often now that I'm tying the knot) but It requires I invest most of the day.

My wife thinks I'm hot, and I will be there (with her), but alas not as a part of the program.
